⚡ Quick Answer

oS signals an internal self-diagnostic or control-circuit fault. Cycle power first. If it returns, replace the control board or drive.

Yaskawa A1000 oS Fault Code — What It Means

The oS fault on a Yaskawa A1000 VFD is a self-diagnostic or internal control-circuit problem. Unlike overcurrent or motor overload faults, oS points to an issue inside the drive’s electronics, not with external wiring or the connected load. The fault triggers when the drive’s internal diagnostics detect a hardware or control board abnormality that prevents normal operation.

Yaskawa’s corrective action is straightforward: cycle power to the drive. If the fault clears and does not return, the issue was likely a transient internal glitch. If oS reappears after power cycling, the manufacturer directs technicians to replace the control board or the entire drive. A damaged operator or keypad connector can also trigger oS, so inspect and replace the operator assembly if connector damage is visible.

Before You Replace Anything

Do not replace the motor, motor cables, or power section first. The oS fault is an internal drive problem, not a load or wiring issue. Power-cycle the drive and inspect the operator connector before replacing any components.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the oS fault clear after cycling power to the drive?
Yes: The fault was likely a transient internal glitch. Monitor the drive during normal operation to see if oS returns.
No: The fault is persistent. Proceed to inspect the operator connector and prepare to replace the control board or drive.
Is the operator or keypad connector visibly damaged or poorly seated?
Yes: Reseat the connector firmly. If damage is visible, replace the operator assembly and test the drive.
No: The fault is inside the drive's control electronics. Plan to replace the control board or complete drive.
Does the fault history show repeated oS codes or other internal alarms?
Yes: Repeated internal faults confirm control board or drive module failure. Replace the board or drive per Yaskawa guidance.
No: A single occurrence after power cycling may be a one-time event. Document the fault and monitor closely before committing to replacement.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Record the fault display and history from the drive’s alarm log before clearing the code or cycling power so you have a complete diagnostic record.
  2. Cycle power to the drive by switching off the main disconnect or control power, waiting at least 30 seconds, and powering the drive back on.
  3. Check whether the oS fault clears on restart and whether the drive returns to normal operation without immediately re-triggering the alarm.
  4. Inspect the operator and keypad connection for physical damage, corrosion, or loose seating, and reseat or replace the operator assembly if damage is found.
  5. Open the drive enclosure (after de-energizing and verifying zero voltage) and look for obvious signs of damage on the control board, such as burn marks, cracked components, or loose connectors.
  6. Replace the control board if the fault persists after power cycling and connector inspection, following Yaskawa’s service procedures and ensuring the replacement board matches your A1000 model.
  7. Replace the entire drive if Yaskawa support recommends it, if the drive module shows internal damage, or if local repair practice favors whole-unit replacement over board-level work.
  8. Test the drive after replacement by running it under normal load conditions and verifying that oS does not return and that all operating parameters are within specification.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Yaskawa A1000 control boardAmazon | Match the exact board part number to your A1000 model and firmware revision.
Yaskawa A1000 operator / keypad assemblyAmazon | Required only if the operator connector is damaged or the keypad hardware is faulty.
Complete Yaskawa A1000 VFDAmazon | Replacement drive matching your original horsepower, voltage, and enclosure rating if board-level repair is not feasible.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified VFD technician or industrial electrician immediately. The oS fault requires opening the drive enclosure and working with high-voltage DC bus capacitors that remain energized even after input power is removed. Control board and drive replacement demand proper lockout/tagout, discharge procedures, correct part matching, and firmware handling. Attempting this work without training risks shock, equipment damage, and warranty voidance. A technician will verify the fault history, perform safe power-down and discharge, inspect internal hardware, and replace the control board or drive following Yaskawa service protocols.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $400–1,200 depending on whether the control board alone or the complete drive is replaced.
