Yale Forklift Error Code 6 — Low Oil Pressure Fix
What it means: The ECM detected engine oil pressure below the minimum threshold (typically 8-10 PSI depending on engine model). The ECM logs code 6 and may limit engine speed or initiate a shutdown to prevent catastrophic engine damage.
This is a critical fault on Yale GP series forklifts with GM Vortec and PSG engines.

1. Check the Oil Level
Stop the engine. Let it sit for 5 minutes for oil to drain back. Pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert, and check. Low oil is the most common cause of code 6 on Yale forklifts. Yale GM Vortec engines (commonly used in GP series) hold 5-6 quarts. Add SAE 15W-40 diesel oil (recommended for LP/diesel forklift engines).
2. Test with a Manual Gauge
The oil pressure sender on GM Vortec engines is notoriously unreliable after 4,000-6,000 hours. Install a mechanical oil pressure gauge in the sender port. Start the engine. Hot idle pressure should be at least 10 PSI, and 20+ PSI at 1500+ RPM. If the mechanical gauge shows normal pressure but the ECM still shows code 6, the sender is failed. Replace it.

3. Check Oil Viscosity
Yale engines require 15W-40 for LP/diesel operation in most climates. Using 10W-30 (common in automotive applications) can cause low oil pressure at operating temperature in Yale engines, especially in hot warehouses. If the oil level is correct and the sender tests good, drain and refill with the correct viscosity.
4. Listen for Bearing Noise
If the mechanical gauge confirms low oil pressure (below 10 PSI at hot idle), the engine has an internal problem. Listen for a knocking sound from the lower engine — this indicates rod bearing wear. A Yale GM Vortec with rod knock needs an engine rebuild or replacement. At that point, the repair cost typically exceeds the forklift’s residual value.
