Whirlpool Washer Lid Error Code — What It Means

Whirlpool washers display different lid-related codes depending on the model. On many top-load washers, a “LID” or “Lid opened” message simply means the washer detected the lid was left open. Closing the lid clears the display. If the lid stays open for more than about 10 minutes, the cycle resets and the washer drains out.

On other Whirlpool top-load HE models, a flashing Lid Lock light or the code F5/E3 indicates a lid-lock fault. This means the lock did not move into the locked position, the lock motor cannot be powered, or the lid is not fully closed due to interference. The washer will not start until the lid lock engages correctly.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Close the lid completely and make sure it latches firmly. On many Whirlpool models the “LID” message clears immediately when the lid is shut.
  2. Check for obstructions around the lid lock and the striker on the underside of the lid. Remove any lint, detergent buildup, or fabric that may be blocking the lock mechanism.
  3. Inspect the lock striker on the lid for alignment. If it is bent or out of position, adjust or replace it so it lines up with the lock assembly in the frame.
  4. Confirm the cycle selector is set to a valid cycle and press and hold the Start button for up to 3 seconds. Some models require a long press to engage the lock.
  5. Perform a power reset by unplugging the washer from the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnecting power. This clears temporary control faults.
  6. Check the lid lock harness for loose or damaged connectors between the lid lock assembly and the main control board. Reseat or repair any connections.
  7. Test or replace the lid lock assembly if the error persists with the lid fully closed, no obstructions present, and good wiring. Verify the lock motor receives power from the control before replacing the board.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Lid lock assemblyAmazon | Verify your exact Whirlpool model number to match the correct lock mechanism for your washer.
Lid lock strikerAmazon | Mounts on the underside of the lid and aligns with the lock. Replace if bent or damaged.
Wire harness or connectorAmazon | Order the specific harness for your model if wiring to the lid lock is cut or corroded.
Main control boardAmazon | Replace only after confirming the lid lock and wiring are good but the lock receives no power signal.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the lid lock light continues flashing or the error code returns after you have closed the lid, cleaned the lock area, performed a power reset, and verified the striker alignment. If you are not comfortable using a multimeter to check for power at the lid lock or if you suspect the main control board is not sending the correct signal, a qualified appliance technician can diagnose the electrical fault and replace the lid lock assembly or control board safely.
