Whirlpool LF Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

LF means your Whirlpool washer isn't filling with water fast enough. Usually caused by low water pressure or clogged inlet screens.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Whirlpool LF Error Code — What It Means

The LF code (also displayed as F8 E1 or LO FL on some Whirlpool models) means your washer is detecting a long fill or low fill condition. The machine is not seeing the correct amount of incoming water within the expected time. This fault can be caused by actual water-supply problems or by incorrect drain installation that siphons water out as fast as it comes in.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Check both water supply valves. Walk to the wall behind the washer and turn both the hot and cold shut-off valves fully counterclockwise to confirm they are wide open.
  2. Inspect the inlet hoses. Look along the entire length of both hoses for kinks, crushing, or tight bends, and straighten any restrictions you find.
  3. Clean the inlet screens. Turn off both water valves, disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer, and use a flashlight to look inside each port on the valve body. Use a small brush and water to clean any debris from the mesh screens without prying them out.
  4. Verify drain-hose installation. Pull the drain hose out of the standpipe and measure how far the end was inserted. Whirlpool specifies no more than 4.5 inches of insertion, and the hose should never be taped or sealed into the pipe.
  5. Run a test fill cycle. Reconnect everything, restore power, and start a normal wash cycle to see if the washer now fills without throwing the code.
  6. Test water flow from the hoses. If the code returns, turn off the water again, pull both hoses off the washer, aim them into a bucket, and open the valves to check for strong flow from each line.
  7. Replace the water inlet valve. If supply pressure is good, hoses are clear, screens are clean, and the drain is correct but the washer still will not fill, the valve assembly itself has failed and needs replacement.

When to Call a Pro

If you have verified strong water pressure at the wall, cleaned the screens, corrected the drain-hose height, and replaced the inlet valve but the LF code still appears, the fault may lie in the electronic control board or the wiring that signals the valve to open. Diagnosing the fill circuit requires a multimeter and knowledge of your specific model’s control system, so at that point a service technician with Whirlpool diagnostic software and wiring diagrams is the right call.
