Whirlpool Oven Door Gasket Replacement — What This Part Does

The oven door gasket is a heat-resistant seal that runs around the oven opening. Its job is to trap hot air inside the cavity when the door is closed, so you get consistent cooking temperatures and no wasted energy. The gasket sits in clips or holes around the door frame and compresses when you close the door.

Gaskets fail from normal wear, high heat, and repeated door use. The rubber or fiberglass material can tear, flatten out, or pull loose from its retaining clips. When the gasket no longer seats properly, hot air leaks out around the door and the oven can’t hold temperature. Physical damage during cleaning or slamming the door can also rip the seal or knock it out of its mounting points.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Disconnect power to the range or oven at the circuit breaker or unplug the appliance before starting any work.
  2. Open the oven door fully and locate the gasket ends at the bottom of the door frame.
  3. Pull the gasket ends out of the bottom slots or retaining holes using your fingers or needle-nose pliers if they are stuck.
  4. Work around the perimeter of the door frame and remove the retaining clips that hold the gasket in place, using pliers if needed.
  5. Lift the old gasket away from the frame once all clips and fasteners are released.
  6. Position the new gasket around the door opening and align the retaining clips with the mounting holes or groove.
  7. Work around the full perimeter, pressing the clips into place until the gasket is seated evenly along the entire frame.
  8. Insert the two gasket ends into the bottom slots or openings and confirm they are secure.
  9. Close the oven door and verify the seal compresses uniformly with no gaps, then restore power and test the oven for proper heat containment.

When to Call a Pro

If the new gasket still allows heat to leak after proper installation, the problem may be door alignment, damaged retainer hardware, or a warped door frame. A qualified appliance technician can inspect the door hinge mechanism, check frame straightness, and determine if additional parts or adjustments are needed. If you are uncomfortable working around electrical connections or removing the oven door for access, professional service is the safer choice. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
