Whirlpool Oven LOC Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

LOC means the control lock (child lock) is on, not a fault. Press and hold START/ENTER for 5 seconds to unlock the keypad and clear the display.

Whirlpool Oven LOC Error Code — What It Means

LOC on a Whirlpool oven or range is not an error code in the traditional sense. It indicates that the control lock feature (also called child lock) is turned on, which intentionally disables the keypad to prevent unintended use. The display will show LOC whenever you press any button while the control is locked. On most Whirlpool ranges, the control lock also prevents the oven door from being locked if the oven is already in use. This is a safety feature, not a malfunction.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Verify the oven is not in use. The control lock cannot be engaged while the oven is operating, so check that no cook cycle is running.
  2. Press and hold START/ENTER for 5 seconds to unlock the control. Some Whirlpool models use a different button combination, so consult your owner’s manual if this does not work.
  3. Repeat the unlock sequence if the display still shows LOC. Sometimes a second 5-second hold is required to fully clear the lock state.
  4. Reset power at the circuit breaker if the code persists. Turn the breaker off, wait 1 minute, then restore power to clear any control glitch.
  5. Inspect the control panel and keypad for visible damage or loose connections. Look for cracks, moisture, or debris that might interfere with the touchpad.
  6. Check the ribbon cable and wiring harness connections at the back of the control panel. Reseat any connectors that appear loose or corroded.
  7. Replace the user interface board or control panel if LOC will not clear after unlock, reset, and wiring checks. This step should only follow verified failure of the previous steps.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Control panel / touchpad assemblyAmazon | Replace if the touchpad is cracked, unresponsive, or will not exit LOC mode after proper unlock and reset.
User interface board (electronic control)Amazon | Required if the control will not respond to unlock commands and wiring harness connections are secure.
Keypad ribbon cable or wiring harnessAmazon | Needed if you find visible damage, corrosion, or intermittent connection at the control panel.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the LOC display will not clear after you have tried the correct unlock sequence (usually pressing and holding START/ENTER for 5 seconds), performed a full power reset at the breaker, and verified all visible wiring connections are secure. A technician can test the user interface board and control panel with the proper diagnostics and replace only the failed component. Also call for help if you are uncomfortable working near line voltage or if the oven door remains locked after you clear the LOC display, as this may indicate a separate door-latch issue.
