Unresponsive buttons, stuck keys, or touchpad error codes mean your membrane switch has failed. Replacing the touchpad assembly fixes it.

Whirlpool Microwave Touchpad/Keypad Replacement — What This Part Does

The membrane switch (also called the touchpad or keypad assembly) is the thin, flexible control panel on the front of your Whirlpool microwave. When you press a button, it closes a circuit on the membrane layer that signals the main control board to run the selected function. Over time, repeated pressing wears out the contact points inside the membrane, causing buttons to stop responding or register ghost inputs.

Common failure modes include wrinkled or bunched membrane material that interrupts contact, worn-out contact pads under high-use buttons like Start or Number 1, and loose or damaged ribbon-cable connectors between the touchpad and the control board. A transient glitch after a power interruption can also trigger a touchpad error code, which is why a full power cycle is the first diagnostic step before replacing parts.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker, then wait 15 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge and to clear transient faults.
  2. Locate the model and serial number plate (usually on the inside edge of the door frame or on the back panel) and write down the full model number to order the correct touchpad assembly for your unit.
  3. Remove the screws securing the outer control panel or front trim (locations vary by model, typically along the top edge or sides of the door frame) and gently pull the panel forward to access the back side.
  4. Photograph or note the orientation of the ribbon cable connector where the touchpad plugs into the main control board, then carefully release the locking tab or clip and unplug the ribbon cable.
  5. Peel or unclip the old membrane touchpad assembly from the front panel (some are held by adhesive backing, others by plastic clips or tabs).
  6. Position the new membrane touchpad assembly onto the front panel, aligning any mounting holes or tabs, and press firmly to seat adhesive or snap clips into place.
  7. Plug the ribbon cable from the new touchpad into the control board connector, ensuring it is fully seated and the locking tab clicks into place.
  8. Reinstall the outer control panel or trim by aligning the tabs and replacing all screws in their original locations.
  9. Restore power to the microwave, verify the clock or display initializes, then test every button on the keypad to confirm all inputs register correctly and the fault does not return.

When to Call a Pro

If the new touchpad assembly does not resolve the fault and buttons remain unresponsive or error codes persist, the main control board or ACU (appliance control unit) may have failed input circuits and will need professional diagnosis and replacement. Also call a technician if you are not comfortable working inside the control panel or if your microwave uses a combo user-interface panel that includes the display and requires specialized programming or calibration after installation.
