Whirlpool Microwave Cavity Light Bulb Replacement — What This Part Does
The cavity light bulb illuminates the interior of your Whirlpool microwave when you open the door or during cooking, so you can see what’s inside. It sits behind the vent grille at the top front of over-the-range models, under a protective bulb cover.
The bulb fails because incandescent filaments burn out with use, just like any standard household bulb. Whirlpool specifies an incandescent replacement unless your owner’s manual explicitly allows LED. If a fresh bulb doesn’t restore the light, the socket or control board may have failed.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- No light when door opens The cavity stays dark when you pull the door open, even though the light should come on automatically on most models.
- No light during cooking The interior remains unlit while the microwave runs, making it hard to monitor food through the window.
- Dim or flickering light The bulb glows weakly or flickers on and off, indicating the filament is about to fail.
- Light works intermittently The cavity light turns on sometimes but not others, suggesting a loose bulb or failing socket.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet or switch off the circuit breaker serving the unit and wait one minute.
- Locate the vent grille at the top front of the microwave, just below the cabinet or soffit.
- Remove the Phillips screws securing the vent grille and lift or slide the grille away to expose the bulb area.
- Unscrew or unclip the bulb cover protecting the cavity light bulb.
- Twist the old incandescent bulb counterclockwise to remove it from the socket.
- Thread a new 40-watt incandescent microwave light bulb clockwise into the socket until snug, but do not overtighten.
- Replace the bulb cover and snap or screw it back into position.
- Reinstall the vent grille and fasten all Phillips screws.
- Restore power at the outlet or breaker, open the door, and verify the cavity light turns on.

When to Call a Pro
If the new bulb still doesn’t light up, the socket contacts may be corroded or the control board may have failed. Inspecting the socket wiring and testing the board requires disassembling the cabinet and working near high-voltage components, so call an appliance tech if the bulb replacement doesn’t solve the problem.
