Whirlpool Dryer Blower Wheel Replacement - Signs & How-To

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Weak airflow, long dry times, squealing noise, or overheating mean a cracked or jammed blower wheel. Replacing it restores proper venting.

Whirlpool Dryer Blower Wheel Replacement — What This Part Does

The blower wheel is the plastic fan mounted on the motor shaft that pulls air through the dryer drum and pushes it out the exhaust vent. It’s responsible for moving hot air over your clothes and venting moisture outside. When the wheel’s hub cracks, strips out, or seizes on the shaft, airflow drops off and the dryer can’t dry properly. Lint buildup in the blower housing or a wheel that’s come loose will also kill performance.

Most failures happen when the plastic hub cracks from age and heat cycles, or when the wheel seizes onto the motor shaft from corrosion or overtightening during a past repair. If the hub is stripped, the wheel spins freely and produces no airflow even though the motor runs. Seized wheels are tough to remove and often require cutting or controlled force to get off without damaging the motor shaft.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker before you start any disassembly.
  2. Remove the lint filter and any screws securing the lint filter housing, then lift or slide the housing out to access the front of the blower assembly.
  3. Remove the front or top panels as needed to access the drum and belt, then remove the drum by lifting it out after releasing the belt tension.
  4. Locate the blower housing at the base or rear of the cabinet and remove the blower cover or duct sections held by screws or clips to expose the blower wheel.
  5. Hold the motor shaft flat or hex with a wrench from the opposite end, then turn the blower wheel clockwise to loosen it (Whirlpool blower wheels use reverse threads).
  6. If the wheel is seized or stripped, use locking pliers on the damaged hub or carefully cut away the plastic without scoring the motor shaft, then clean any debris or corrosion from the shaft.
  7. Thread the new blower wheel onto the motor shaft by turning it counterclockwise and tighten it snugly by hand, then give it a final turn while holding the motor shaft to secure it without overforcing the plastic.
  8. Reinstall the blower cover and any ducts or bulkhead parts, then replace the drum, belt, lint housing, and cabinet panels in reverse order.
  9. Plug the dryer back in and run a test cycle to verify strong exhaust airflow and normal operation, and check for any rattling or rubbing sounds from the blower area.

The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro

If the blower wheel is completely seized and you can’t remove it without damaging the motor shaft, or if the motor shaft itself is damaged or bent, call a tech. If you’re not comfortable disassembling the cabinet, removing the drum, or dealing with reverse-threaded fasteners, a pro can handle the teardown and check the idler pulley, drum rollers, and belt for wear at the same time. Any situation where the motor won’t turn freely or you see bearing damage on the shaft is also a job for a technician.
