Whirlpool Dishwasher Won’t Fill With Water — What’s Happening

A Whirlpool dishwasher that won’t fill with water is showing a symptom, not a specific fault code. The fill function is being blocked because the control system believes the dishwasher is already full, the door is open, or water supply and valve conditions are not correct. The dishwasher is failing to admit water because the fill circuit is being stopped mechanically or electrically.

Most Likely Causes

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the complaint by starting a cycle and confirming the dishwasher attempts fill but does not admit water.
  2. Check the house water supply valve under the sink is fully open and water pressure is available to the appliance.
  3. Inspect the water supply hose for kinks, crushing, cracks, leaks, or blockage, and repair or replace if damaged.
  4. Remove the lower access panel and inspect the water inlet valve for visible damage, leaks, debris, or mineral buildup, and replace the valve assembly if defective.
  5. Inspect the float and make sure it moves freely and is not blocked by debris, and clean the float chamber if obstructed.
  6. Inspect the float switch for correct actuation and electrical function, and replace if defective.
  7. Inspect the door latch and switch so the control recognizes a closed door, and replace failed components.
  8. Check drain hose routing and correct the installation so the loop is positioned at least 20 inches above the floor or subfloor to prevent siphoning, then evaluate the control board and wiring to the valve circuit if all other checks pass.

Parts You Might Need

Door latch and switch assemblyAmazon | Replace if the control does not recognize a closed door.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with water connections, electrical testing, or disassembling the lower access panel. If you have verified water supply, cleaned the inlet valve and float, checked the door latch, corrected drain hose routing, and the dishwasher still will not fill, the problem is likely in the control board or wiring and requires diagnostic tools and experience to isolate the fault safely.
