Whirlpool Dishwasher Control Panel/Touchpad/UI Board Replacement — What This Part Does

The control panel (also called the user interface board or touchpad assembly) interprets button presses, displays cycle status, and sends commands to the main control board. It houses the keypad membrane or touch sensors, indicator lights, and the display. Over time, moisture intrusion, stuck buttons from a warped console, a failed touchpad membrane, or internal circuit failure can prevent the panel from responding or cause it to register phantom key presses.

Whirlpool’s service literature does not assign one universal fault code to control panel failures. Instead, the exact diagnostic path depends on your model’s symptom and service error code. Common patterns include stuck-key errors, a completely dead display with no lights, or unresponsive buttons. Whirlpool directs technicians to check for stuck keys, verify the control housing is fully seated and aligned, inspect the door wiring harness and UI cable, and replace the control if the issue persists after those checks.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker, then turn off the water supply valve under the sink or at the dishwasher connection.
  2. Open the dishwasher door and remove the screws securing the inner door panel (usually along the top and sides inside the tub) to access the control console.
  3. Carefully separate the inner door liner from the outer door panel, supporting both pieces, and lay the door assembly on a padded surface so you can reach the back of the control panel.
  4. Disconnect all wire harness connectors from the back of the user interface board, noting their positions or taking a photo for reference.
  5. Remove the mounting screws or tabs that hold the control panel/touchpad assembly to the door frame, then lift the old UI board out of the console housing.
  6. Position the new control panel in the console, align the mounting holes, and secure it with the original screws or snap the retaining tabs into place.
  7. Reconnect all wire harness connectors to the new UI board, making sure each plug seats fully and matches your reference photo.
  8. Reassemble the inner door panel to the outer door, tighten all screws evenly, and check that the control housing is fully seated and that no button trees or light pipes are missing or damaged.
  9. Restore water supply and electrical power, then press a button to verify the display lights up and the keypad responds correctly before running a short test cycle.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Control panel / touchpad / user interface (UI) boardAmazon | Find your dishwasher’s full model and serial number on the label inside the door frame or along the top edge of the tub. Use that number to order the correct UI assembly, as Whirlpool uses model-specific control boards and connector layouts.
Button tree or light pipe kit (if applicable)Amazon | Some models use separate plastic button trees or light pipes that snap into the console. Whirlpool’s tech sheet directs replacement of these parts if they are missing or damaged. Check your model’s illustrated parts list to confirm.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working inside the door assembly or if diagnostics reveal a main control board fault rather than a UI board issue, contact a qualified appliance technician. A technician can enter service mode, read stored fault codes specific to your model, check door alignment and wiring, and determine whether the UI board or the main control board needs replacement. Professional diagnosis prevents ordering the wrong part and can uncover related problems such as loose connectors or console misalignment that cause the same symptoms.
