The E1 error on Victory Refrigeration commercial units (reach-in refrigerators, freezers, and chef bases) indicates a temperature sensor fault — the cabinet air sensor has failed or is reading outside the valid range. Victory’s electronic controllers monitor cabinet temperature via NTC thermistor; E1 fires when that signal is absent or invalid.
Common Causes
- Failed NTC sensor — The probe fails open circuit after extended service in refrigerated environments.
- Damaged sensor lead — The sensor wire is routed through the cabinet interior; pinching at shelves or door hinges causes wire breaks.
- Connector corrosion — Kitchen humidity oxidizes the sensor connector pins at the controller board over time.
- Controller board input failure — The analog sensor input on the board fails, reading E1 even with a good sensor.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Locate and disconnect the sensor — The air sensor is typically clipped to the evaporator coil or mounted in the upper cabinet interior. Disconnect from the harness.
- Test resistance — At ~70°F, a standard 10k NTC should read ~10kΩ. Open circuit = replace.
- Inspect the lead wire — Check for pinch damage at shelving channels, door frames, and any area where the wire contacts metal.
- Clean and reseat the connector — Unplug the sensor connector at the board, inspect for oxidation, clean with contact cleaner, reseat firmly.
- Replace sensor and power cycle — Use a Victory OEM replacement. Power cycle after installation. E1 should clear once the controller reads a valid temperature.
