Speed Queen FL Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

FL means the washer didn't fill to the needed water level in time. Usually caused by closed supply valves or clogged inlet screens.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Speed Queen FL Error Code — What It Means

The FL code (also displayed as Er FL or E_FL on some models) means your Speed Queen washer did not reach the required water level within the allowed fill time. The machine started filling but the control never saw the expected water-level change before timing out. On commercial Quantum equipment the timeout is 10 minutes, while some residential models allow up to 30 minutes before throwing the code. Either way, the control is telling you water is not entering the tub fast enough or the level-sensing system is not registering the fill.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power-cycle the washer by unplugging it for one minute, then plug back in and run a rinse-and-spin or test cycle to confirm the FL code returns or to clear a transient fault.
  2. Check both hot and cold supply valves at the wall and turn each fully counterclockwise to the wide-open position, then try a fill cycle on each temperature setting to isolate which side may be restricted.
  3. Inspect the inlet hoses behind the washer for kinks, sharp bends, or crushing where the machine sits close to the wall, and straighten or reposition any pinched sections.
  4. Remove and clean the inlet screens by shutting off the supply valves, disconnecting each hose at the washer, and using needle-nose pliers to carefully pull the small mesh filter from each inlet port and rinse under a faucet.
  5. Test fill performance by placing the loose end of one supply hose into a bucket and turning on that wall valve to measure flow rate, which should deliver a strong stream in a few seconds if house pressure and the hose are good.
  6. Inspect the inlet valve assembly if screens and supply are clean and pressure is normal by accessing the valve behind the rear or top panel (depending on model), checking for solenoid continuity across each coil (typically 500–4,000 ohms, consult your model’s service sheet), and verifying no internal blockage or scale buildup.
  7. Examine the pressure-sensing system if the tub actually fills but the code still appears by locating the small rubber or vinyl air hose from the outer tub or sump to the pressure switch, confirming it is connected at both ends, free of cracks or kinks, and that the switch or sensor connector is seated firmly.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Inlet water valve assemblyAmazon | Order the mixing valve specific to your Speed Queen model number if tests show one or both solenoid coils are open or the valve does not open mechanically.
Inlet hose screens (filter screens)Amazon | Available as inexpensive mesh inserts or integrated with new inlet hoses if the originals are damaged during cleaning.
Water pressure switch or pressure sensorAmazon | Replace if the air-hose system is intact but continuity or switching tests fail, consult your model’s wiring diagram for switch terminal values.
Water supply hosesAmazon | Standard ¾-inch washing-machine hoses if the existing hoses are kinked, cracked, or internally restricted and cannot be cleared.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you have verified both supply valves are open, cleaned all inlet screens, checked hoses for kinks, confirmed good household water pressure, and the FL code still appears. Diagnosing a failed inlet valve solenoid, pressure switch, or control-board logic fault requires a multimeter, service manual resistance tables, and familiarity with Speed Queen harness connectors. If the machine is under warranty or you are uncomfortable working with water connections and electrical components behind panels, professional service will save time and prevent accidental damage to sensor hoses or wiring.
