Speed Queen Washer E:05 Error - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E:05 means your Speed Queen washer has a water-level sensor fault. Most often the pressure switch or its hose is blocked or disconnected.

Speed Queen Washer E:05 Error — What It Means

The E:05 error on a Speed Queen washer indicates a water-level or pressure-switch fault. The control board is not receiving a valid signal about how much water is in the tub, so the machine cannot run the cycle safely. This is a pressure-sensing problem, not a door-lock or heater issue.

The fault can stem from something as simple as closed supply valves or kinked inlet hoses, or from a failed pressure switch, blocked air tube, or wiring problem between the sensor and the control board. Until the board sees a believable water-level signal, the washer will not advance.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power-reset the washer by unplugging it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and retry a cycle to clear any transient fault.
  2. Check both water-supply valves behind the machine and confirm they are fully open, then inspect both inlet hoses for kinks or crushed sections.
  3. Clean the inlet-valve screens by shutting off the valves, unscrewing the hoses at the washer, and pulling the small mesh filters from each inlet port to rinse away sediment.
  4. Locate and inspect the pressure hose (a small rubber or vinyl tube running from an air trap on the tub to the pressure switch mounted on the control housing) for kinks, cracks, water or soap buildup inside, and secure connections at both ends.
  5. Test the pressure switch by disconnecting its wiring harness and gently blowing into the pressure-hose port while listening for audible clicks, or use a multimeter to check continuity changes as you apply and release gentle air pressure (consult your model’s service manual for exact resistance values).
  6. Inspect all wiring and connectors between the pressure switch and the main control board for loose pins, corrosion, or frayed wires, and reseat each connector firmly.
  7. Replace the pressure switch if water supply and hoses are good but the switch does not respond to pressure changes, or replace the main control board if the switch tests good but the error persists.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Pressure switch (water-level sensor)Amazon | Match your exact Speed Queen model number. Usually mounted on or near the control housing.
Pressure hose (air tube)Amazon | Small-diameter rubber or vinyl tube. Replace if cracked, kinked, or clogged.
Main control board (electronic control)Amazon | Only if pressure switch and wiring test good but fault returns. Verify model compatibility before ordering.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you have verified that both supply valves are open and hoses are clear but the E:05 error returns, or if you are uncomfortable working with electrical connectors and testing components with a multimeter. A pro can use factory diagnostic modes to pinpoint whether the fault lies in the pressure switch, the wiring harness, or the control board, and many Speed Queen models require special tooling or software to access those tests. Professional service is also the best choice if your washer is still under warranty, since DIY repairs can void coverage.
