Error Code 7 on Scotsman ice machines (particularly Q-Series and Prodigy models) indicates a water inlet valve fault — the machine detected inadequate water flow during the fill cycle. The SmartBoard controller monitors water level; if the trough doesn’t fill to the required level within the timeout period, Code 7 is logged and the machine stops to prevent dry evaporator operation.
Common Causes
- Closed or restricted water supply — A partially closed shutoff valve upstream of the machine is the most overlooked cause. Check this first.
- Clogged water inlet valve — The solenoid valve that admits water to the machine accumulates scale on its screen and in the solenoid body over time.
- Low supply pressure — Scotsman machines require 20–80 PSI at the inlet. Below 20 PSI causes slow fills.
- Failed water inlet solenoid — A failed solenoid coil prevents the valve from opening regardless of supply pressure.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Confirm the supply shutoff is fully open — Trace the water line from the machine to the shutoff. Confirm fully open; check for kinks in the supply tubing.
- Check supply pressure — Use an inline gauge at the machine’s inlet. Below 20 PSI requires supply-side repair.
- Clean the inlet valve — Turn off water, disconnect the inlet hose at the valve, and inspect/clean the inlet screen. Scale or debris blocking the screen = restricted flow.
- Test the solenoid — With a multimeter, check coil resistance at the valve terminals. Typical range: 200–500Ω. Open = failed coil. Replace the valve assembly.
- Reset and monitor — Power cycle the machine (Off 3 seconds, then On). Confirm the trough fills normally and Code 7 does not return on the next cycle.
