Samsung Washer OE Error Code — What It Means

On Samsung washers, OE signals a drain abnormality or drain timeout. The washer has detected that water is not leaving the tub within the expected time during the drain portion of the cycle. In practical terms, the code points to a failure somewhere in the drain path rather than a sensor fault. The typical behavior is water remaining in the drum, the cycle stopping mid-wash, and the machine refusing to spin until the water level drops.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power at the wall or breaker and place towels or a shallow pan around the front access door to catch spillage.
  2. Open the lower front service panel (usually a small door at the bottom of the washer) and locate the emergency drain hose if your model has one, then route it into a pan and uncap it to empty residual water slowly.
  3. Remove the drain filter or coin trap by turning it counterclockwise, pull it out, and clean away all lint, coins, hair ties, and debris, then rinse the filter under running water and reinstall it snugly.
  4. Inspect the pump impeller by shining a light into the filter cavity and checking for foreign objects or damage, then spin the impeller by hand to confirm it rotates freely without binding.
  5. Check the drain hose at the rear of the washer for kinks, crushing, or blockage, verify the hose is not pushed more than a few inches into the standpipe, and inspect the sink tailpiece or standpipe connection for clogs.
  6. Restore power and run a Drain & Spin cycle (or a short rinse/spin test with no laundry) to verify the washer drains completely and spins at full speed without repeating the OE code.
  7. Replace the drain pump assembly if the code returns and the impeller is damaged, the motor hums without pumping, or water flow remains weak after all blockages have been cleared.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Drain pump assemblyAmazon | Choose the pump that matches your Samsung model number (printed inside the door or on the rear panel).
Drain filter or coin trapAmazon | Often sold as a standalone part if threads are stripped or the seal is damaged.
Drain hoseAmazon | Replace if the hose is cracked, split, or permanently kinked and cannot be straightened.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if the OE code persists after you have cleaned the filter, cleared the hose, and verified the pump spins freely. A professional can test the drain pump motor for electrical faults, check the water inlet valve for leakage or sticking if the washer continues to overfill, and diagnose control or sensing circuit issues that are not obvious from the hydraulic path alone. Also call if you are uncomfortable working with water spillage, accessing internal components, or handling electrical connections on a wet appliance.
