Samsung Microwave Sparking — What’s Happening

Samsung microwave sparking is arcing inside the cavity during operation. Samsung states this is typically caused by food particles or residue left in the cavity that become energized when the microwave runs, especially after grill mode. Samsung also notes there is no electronic part inside the cavity that should spark.

This symptom is separate from the SE or 5E error code, which Samsung defines as a Key Short Error and involves a different fault. Cavity sparking is almost always a contamination or foreign-object issue rather than an electronic failure.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the microwave and verify it is fully de-energized before any inspection, as high-voltage components can retain lethal charge even when unplugged.
  2. Open the door and inspect the entire cavity for burnt food residue, grease spots, metal fragments, foil, twist ties, or any foreign objects and remove them.
  3. Check all accessories including the turntable, racks, and crisping pan for damage, warping, or signs they are touching the cavity walls during use.
  4. Inspect the waveguide cover or any cavity cover panel for burn marks, holes, cracks, or heavy contamination, particularly if sparking appeared to come from one spot.
  5. Clean the cavity thoroughly using Samsung’s recommended steam method: place 2 cups of water plus 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a microwave-safe container, run microwave mode for 15 minutes, then wipe all surfaces clean.
  6. Check the interior paint and coating for chips, scratches, or areas where bare metal is exposed, especially near spark marks.
  7. After cleaning and removing all metal, plug the unit back in and test-run it empty to confirm whether the arcing was residue-related.
  8. If sparking continues after thorough cleaning and removal of all foreign objects, proceed to internal component inspection for waveguide cover damage, door-related issues, or other burnt parts and replace as needed.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Waveguide cover / cavity coverAmazon | Most common replacement when arcing is localized and cover shows burning, cracking, or carbon tracking.
Turntable support or microwave rackAmazon | Replace if warped, damaged, or causing contact with cavity walls.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if sparking continues after you have thoroughly cleaned the cavity and removed all metal objects. Internal inspection and repair require working around high-voltage components that can retain lethal charge even when unplugged. If the waveguide cover is damaged, the interior coating is badly burned, or you see repeated arcing from the same spot, a technician can safely inspect the cavity assembly, replace the damaged cover or parts, and verify there is no damage to the magnetron or waveguide system.
