Samsung Dryer tC5 Error Code - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

tC5 means a temperature-sensing fault. Most often caused by blocked vents or lint buildup. Clean the vent path and lint screen first.

Samsung Dryer tC5 Error Code — What It Means

The tC5 code signals a temperature-control or temperature-sensing fault in your Samsung dryer. The control board is detecting that temperature is not being sensed or regulated correctly during the drying cycle. This code belongs to Samsung’s temperature-error family, which includes tS, t5, tC, tO, tE, tE3, and tCS. In most field cases, tC5 points to an overheat condition caused by restricted airflow or a failed thermistor (temperature sensor) and related circuit components.

Unlike codes that indicate a single broken part, tC5 typically results from either poor exhaust ventilation that causes the dryer to overheat or a sensor that has drifted out of range or failed completely. The dryer’s safety systems detect the problem and halt operation to prevent damage or fire risk. Airflow restrictions are the most common root cause, so always start your diagnosis there before suspecting internal electronic failures.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Reset the dryer by unplugging it or turning off the circuit breaker for one minute, then restore power and run a short test cycle to see if the code returns.
  2. Clean the lint screen thoroughly by removing all visible lint, then wash the screen with warm soapy water to remove any waxy film from dryer sheets, rinse completely, and dry before reinstalling.
  3. Check airflow at the exterior vent hood while the dryer is running on high heat by feeling for strong, steady exhaust flow. Weak, pulsing, or absent airflow indicates a restriction somewhere in the vent path.
  4. Inspect the entire exhaust vent system from the dryer to the outside termination, looking for crushed or kinked flexible duct, excessive length or elbows, lint accumulation inside rigid or flex duct, and obstructions at the exterior hood.
  5. Disconnect the vent hose at the dryer (if safe and permitted) and run a short test cycle to see if the code clears. If it does, the problem is in the vent system rather than the dryer’s internal sensors.
  6. Test the thermistor resistance by accessing the sensor (usually mounted on the blower housing or duct) with the dryer unplugged, disconnecting the sensor, and measuring resistance with a multimeter. A typical Samsung thermistor reads around 10 kΩ at room temperature, but consult your model’s service data for exact specs.
  7. Inspect sensor wiring and connectors for loose pins, corrosion, or breaks, and check the high-limit thermostat for continuity (it should be closed at room temperature). If airflow and sensors test normal but the code persists, the control board may need evaluation or replacement.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Samsung dryer thermistor / temperature sensorAmazon | Match the part number to your exact model. Common failure item when tC5 persists after airflow checks.
Samsung dryer high-limit thermostatAmazon | Safety cutoff device that opens on overheat. Replace if it does not show continuity at room temperature.
Dryer vent duct and elbowsAmazon | Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, minimize length and bends, and make sure the exterior hood opens freely.
Samsung dryer main control boardAmazon | Only replace after confirming sensors, wiring, and airflow are all normal. Verify the board part number for your model.

When to Call a Pro

If you have cleaned the lint screen and verified the entire vent path is clear but the tC5 code returns immediately, the problem is likely in the sensor circuit or control board. Testing the thermistor and high-limit thermostat requires a multimeter and safe access to internal wiring while the dryer is unplugged. If you are not comfortable working with electrical connectors or interpreting resistance readings, or if the thermistor and safety devices test normal but the code persists, call a qualified appliance technician. They can perform live voltage checks, compare sensor curves to factory specs, and determine whether the control board is processing signals correctly. Also call a pro if you suspect the vent system is built into the wall or runs a long distance and you cannot safely inspect or clean it yourself.
