The E1 error on Nor-Lake commercial refrigerators (reach-ins, undercounters, and chef bases) indicates a temperature sensor fault — the cabinet air sensor is reading out of range or has failed. Nor-Lake’s electronic controllers use NTC thermistors to monitor and regulate cabinet temperature; E1 appears when the sensor input is open circuit, shorted, or reading outside the expected temperature range.
Common Causes
- Failed NTC thermistor — The most common cause. NTC probes fail open after extended service in cold, wet environments.
- Sensor wire damaged — The sensor lead can be pinched at a door hinge or shelf bracket.
- Corroded connector — The sensor connector at the controller board oxidizes in kitchen humidity.
- Controller board failure — The sensor input circuit on the board fails, reading E1 even with a good sensor.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Locate the sensor — Usually clipped to the evaporator coil or mounted in the cabinet interior. Disconnect it from the wiring harness.
- Test resistance — At ~70°F, a standard 10k NTC should read ~10kΩ. Open or near-zero = replace.
- Inspect wiring — Check the sensor lead for damage at hinge points and rack contact areas.
- Clean the connector — Unplug at the board, inspect pins for corrosion, clean with contact cleaner.
- Replace and power cycle — Install Nor-Lake OEM replacement sensor, power cycle, confirm E1 clears.
