Miele dishwashers display fault codes as F-codes (F11, F13, F19, etc.). Miele’s engineering is excellent and their machines last 20+ years, but when something does fail, repairs often require authorized service technicians and proprietary diagnostic equipment. This guide is honest about what you can fix yourself and what you should call Miele about.

What You Can Fix Yourself
F11 — Drainage Fault
The machine can’t drain. This is the most DIY-friendly Miele error.
Fix:
- Run a Rinse & Hold cycle first — this sometimes clears a temporary blockage.
- Clean the filter system. Miele uses a triple filter: a coarse filter (mesh), a fine filter (flat plate), and a microfilter (round mesh). Remove the lower basket, unscrew the cylindrical filter, lift out the flat filter below it. Rinse all three parts thoroughly with a brush.
- Check the drain hose for kinks under the sink.
- If connected to a garbage disposal, confirm the disposal inlet knockout was removed.
F12 / F13 — Water Intake
Water isn’t reaching the machine.
Fix:
- Confirm the shutoff valve under the sink is fully open.
- Check the inlet hose for kinks.
- Clean the inlet hose filter screen (where the hose connects to the machine, there’s a small mesh screen — unscrew the hose end, rinse the screen).
F14 — Waterproof System Triggered
Water has reached the base tray (Miele’s flood protection). Similar to Bosch E15.
Fix: Unplug machine. Tilt backward to drain the base. Find and fix the leak source (door gasket, hose connections). Dry the base completely before restarting.
F19 — Heater Pressure Switch Fault
This code often appears due to limescale buildup on the pressure switch sensor.
Fix: Run a descaling cycle with Miele dishwasher cleaner or a citric acid dishwasher tablet. Miele recommends descaling every 3 months in hard water areas. If F19 persists after descaling, the sensor needs replacement — a technician repair.
What Requires Authorized Service
F24, F51, F52, F53 and other module faults typically require Miele’s diagnostic software (Miele@home or service tools) to properly diagnose and repair. Parts for Miele machines are not universally available from third-party suppliers, and incorrect repairs can void the remaining warranty.
Miele offers a service contract and annual maintenance option that is worth considering for machines more than 5 years old. The cost of a service visit and repair on a 15-year-old Miele is usually still economically justified — the machines last so long that repair vs. replace math strongly favors repair.
Miele Maintenance That Prevents Errors
Descale every 3 months in hard water areas. Miele-brand descaler or citric acid tablets are effective. The heater and pump on Miele machines are premium quality, but limescale accumulation will kill them over time.
Use dishwasher salt. Miele machines have a built-in water softener that requires dishwasher salt — not table salt. Keep the salt reservoir full. Low salt means hard water runs through the machine and deposits scale on internal components.
Use the rinse aid dispenser. Miele machines are calibrated for rinse aid. Without it, dishes come out spotted and the machine works harder.
