Maytag Washer F7E1 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F7E1 means the washer cannot reach the right drum speed. On top-load models the usual fix is replacing the shift actuator.

Maytag Washer F7E1 Error Code — What It Means

F7E1 is a motor or drive speed fault. The control is not getting the drum speed feedback it expects, so it stops the cycle. On top-load models the speed sensor lives inside the shift actuator, which is the part that fails most often.

The washer may stall during wash or spin, or fail to switch between agitate and spin. Less often the cause is the drive belt, a wiring fault, or the control board.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Reset power. Unplug the washer for five minutes, plug it back in, and try a cycle.
  2. Check for trapped items. Remove the basket if needed and clear any object stuck between the basket and tub.
  3. Inspect the drive belt and pulleys. Confirm the belt sits on both pulleys and the pulley is tight.
  4. Inspect the shift actuator. Look for a cracked housing or loose connector at the actuator under the machine.
  5. Reseat the wiring. Check the connectors at the actuator, motor, and control board for a firm fit.
  6. Replace the shift actuator. On top-load models this clears most F7E1 faults, match the part to your model number.
  7. Test a full cycle. Run wash and spin and confirm the drum reaches speed and the code stays clear.

When to Call a Pro

If the actuator, belt, and wiring all check out and F7E1 keeps returning, the motor or main control board may need meter testing. Those calls are a good time to bring in an appliance technician.
