Maytag Dryer Squeaking — What’s Happening

Squeaking in a Maytag dryer is a mechanical noise symptom, not a fault code. The source of the squeak tells you what’s likely worn or loose. If the noise comes from the bottom of the cabinet, it’s usually loose or unlevel dryer legs. Squeaking from the front area often points to a worn idler pulley. Noise from the back of the dryer commonly means worn drum bearings, drum support rollers, roller shafts, the drive belt, or drum glides.

Other causes can include a malfunctioning motor, a clogged or off-balance blower wheel, or loose items in the drum or lint chute. The most common culprits supported by Maytag are unlevel or loose legs, worn idler pulley, worn drum bearings, worn roller shafts, a damaged or frayed drive belt, and worn drum glides. Roller shafts with buildup, scratches, or dings will squeak. Worn drum glides can also cause grinding, brown spots on clothes, or clothes catching between the drum and door.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall for safe access.
  2. Identify where the squeak is coming from by listening at the bottom, front, and back of the cabinet while the drum turns.
  3. Place a level across the top of the dryer from front to back and side to side to check if it’s level.
  4. If the dryer is unlevel or wobbles, tilt it back safely and tighten the leveling legs with a wrench until the dryer sits flat and stable.
  5. If leveling does not fix the squeak, remove the cabinet panels per your model’s service manual to access internal wear parts.
  6. Inspect the idler pulley for flat spots, seizure, or excessive wear, and check the drum support rollers and roller shafts for buildup, scratches, dings, or wobble.
  7. Inspect the drive belt for fraying, cracks, or glazing, and check the drum glides for wear (if one glide is worn, replace both).
  8. Check the drum bearings at the rear support and inspect the blower housing and lint chute for debris or loose items, then replace any worn or damaged components and reassemble the dryer for a load test.

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you’re not comfortable disassembling the dryer cabinet or if the squeak persists after leveling and inspecting accessible parts. A technician has the tools and experience to safely diagnose wear on internal components like drum bearings, motor mounts, and the blower wheel. If multiple wear parts need replacement at once, a pro can also evaluate whether repair cost is justified compared to the age and condition of the dryer.
