Maytag Dryer Felt Drum Seal Replacement — What This Part Does

The felt drum seal is the drum-to-bulkhead sealing and support material at the front or rear of the drum, depending on your model. It keeps the drum properly aligned, seals the air path through the cabinet, and cushions the drum as it spins. Over time, heat and friction cause the felt to compress, harden, fray, or separate from its adhesive bond. When the seal lifts off or wears through, the drum can shift out of alignment, rub the cabinet or bulkhead, and create loud scraping or groaning noises during operation.

Adhesive failure is common. The seal starts lifting at one spot and progresses around the circle until sections of felt hang loose or fall off completely. Improper reassembly after earlier service can also fold the seal, pinch it, or leave it not fully seated. Worn drum rollers, idler pulleys, or belt problems can mimic a bad felt seal and make noise that sounds like rubbing, so always inspect those wear parts at the same time.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker to cut all power before starting work.
  2. Remove the top panel or front access panels according to your model’s service instructions to expose the drum and seal area.
  3. Release tension on the drive belt by pushing the idler pulley or lifting the belt off the motor pulley, then pull the drum forward and out of the cabinet.
  4. Peel the old felt seal off the drum lip or bulkhead and scrape away all remaining adhesive with a plastic scraper or putty knife until the surface is clean and dry.
  5. Dry-fit the new felt drum seal around the drum or bulkhead to confirm correct orientation and alignment before applying any adhesive.
  6. Apply a thin, even bead of high-temperature adhesive to the back of the new seal or the mounting surface, then press the seal firmly into place around the entire circle.
  7. Use spring clamps or clothespins to hold the seal in position and let the adhesive cure for about 24 hours before reassembling the dryer.
  8. Reinstall the drum into the cabinet, route the drive belt around the motor and idler pulley, and rotate the drum by hand to confirm it spins freely without rubbing or binding.
  9. Replace the access panels, restore power, and run a short test cycle only after the adhesive has fully cured and the drum turns smoothly.

When to Call a Pro

If you’re not comfortable disassembling the dryer cabinet, lifting the heavy drum, or waiting 24 hours for adhesive cure time, call a tech. Also get help if you find worn drum rollers, a damaged idler pulley, or a cracked drum bearing at the same time, since replacing those parts requires more disassembly and alignment work. A pro can inspect all wear components in one visit and replace everything that’s marginal so you don’t have to tear the machine down twice.
