Maytag Dryer F3E2 Error Code - Causes & Fix

4 min read

What this code means

The F3E2 code on a Maytag dryer indicates a moisture sensor issue. Maytag states the code appears when five consecutive loads are dried without the control board registering moisture sensor data. This does not mean the dryer is overheating. Instead, the control is not seeing valid input from the two moisture-sensing bars inside the drum during automatic cycles.

In practice, the dryer ran five loads where clothes did not make consistent contact with the sensor bars, or the sensor circuit itself failed to send data back to the control. The fault can be triggered by user habits (very small loads or single items), installation problems (an unlevel dryer), or a genuine component failure in the sensor assembly, wiring, or control board.

Before You Replace Anything

Homeowners often replace the control board first, assuming an electronics fault. In most cases the fix is leveling the dryer, cleaning lint or residue off the sensor bars, or testing the sensor harness for a loose connector.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Press Power to clear the code. If the display does not clear, disconnect power at the circuit breaker for five minutes, then restore power and check whether the fault resets.
  2. Check that the dryer is level. Place a bubble level on top of the dryer front-to-back and side-to-side. Adjust the front leveling feet by turning them clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower until the unit is level in both directions.
  3. Inspect the moisture sensor bars inside the drum. Open the door and look for two metal strips, usually located on the back wall or inside the front rim. Wipe both bars with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove lint film, detergent residue, or fabric softener buildup. Check for any metal object (coin, paper clip) bridging the bars.
  4. Run a test cycle with a normal load. Load the dryer with a full, mixed load of damp laundry and select an automatic sensor cycle (for example, Normal Dry). Let the cycle complete and observe whether F3E2 returns. If the code does not reappear, the issue was leveling, load size, or sensor contamination.
  5. Inspect the moisture sensor harness and connector. Unplug the dryer. Remove the top or rear panel to access the sensor connector behind the drum. Check that the plug is fully seated, with no corrosion, broken pins, or damaged wires. Wiggle the connector gently and look for intermittent contact.
  6. Test the moisture sensor circuit. With power disconnected, use a multimeter to check continuity across the sensor leads. Consult your model’s wiring diagram for expected readings. If the sensor shows open or erratic resistance, replace the moisture sensor assembly.
  7. Replace the control board if sensor and wiring are good. If the moisture sensor tests within specification, the harness is intact, and the code persists after clearing and testing, the control board’s sensor input circuit is likely at fault. Order the correct control board for your model and swap it, transferring all wire harness connectors.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Moisture sensor assemblyAmazon | The two metal bars and mounting bracket inside the drum. Verify your model number before ordering.
Moisture sensor wire harnessAmazon | Replacement pigtail or connector if the original is corroded or damaged. Sold separately or as part of the sensor kit.
Main control board / electronic controlAmazon | Required only if sensor and wiring test good but the fault persists. Match the board part number to your dryer model.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with the dryer’s wiring harness, if you cannot access the sensor connector behind the drum, or if you have tested the sensor circuit and found no clear fault but the code continues to appear. A technician can perform voltage and signal tests at the control board to isolate whether the problem is on the sensor side or the control side. Also call a pro if you have replaced the sensor and harness and the fault remains, since that points to a control board issue that requires experience to diagnose and safety precautions to replace.
