Maytag Dryer Drive Belt Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Motor runs but drum won't turn, clothes don't tumble, or dryer is noisy? A broken or slipped drive belt is the cause. Replacing it restores rotation.

Maytag Dryer Drive Belt Replacement — What This Part Does

The drive belt is a long ribbed loop (typically 93 1/2 inches with 4 ribs and 3 grooves on Maytag dryers) that wraps around the drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley. When the motor runs, the belt transfers that rotation to spin the drum and tumble your clothes. Over time the belt stretches, wears down, or breaks from normal use. A worn idler pulley or incorrect routing from past repairs can speed up belt failure. Once the belt slips off or snaps, the motor will still hum or run but the drum sits still and clothes won’t dry.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet to cut all power before any disassembly.
  2. Remove the lint screen, then use a putty knife to release the spring clips under the top panel lip and lift the top back against the wall.
  3. Disconnect the door-switch wire harness, then remove the two screws securing the front bulkhead panel and lift it off to expose the drum and belt path.
  4. Reach under the drum to release tension on the idler pulley (push it toward the motor) and slip the old belt off the motor pulley and idler pulley, then pull it free from the drum.
  5. Inspect the idler pulley for rough bearings or wobble and replace it if you feel any drag or see wear.
  6. Loop the new belt around the drum with the ribbed side (grooves) facing in toward the drum surface, positioning it in the center channel of the drum.
  7. Thread the belt down and around the motor pulley, then around the spring-loaded idler pulley to create tension in the system.
  8. Rotate the drum clockwise by hand several full turns to confirm the belt seats properly in all grooves and does not slip or twist.
  9. Reinstall the front bulkhead panel and door-switch harness, lower the top panel until the clips snap, replace the lint screen, plug in the dryer, and run a test cycle to verify smooth drum rotation.

When to Call a Pro

If you open the cabinet and find the belt intact but the drum still won’t turn, or if the motor itself won’t run, the problem may be a seized drum roller, bad motor, or broken motor mount. Call a pro if you’re not comfortable working inside the dryer cabinet or if reassembly seems unclear for your specific model. Any gas-line work or complex electrical diagnosis is also best left to a qualified appliance technician.
