- Dirty condenser coil — Master-Bilt reach-ins accumulate dust and grease on the condenser coil. A blocked condenser can’t reject heat and cabinet temperature rises.
- Failed condenser fan motor — Without airflow across the condenser, head pressure rises rapidly and cabinet temperature follows.
- Refrigerant system fault — Low refrigerant, failed compressor, or a faulty TXV reduces cooling capacity below what’s needed to maintain setpoint.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Check door gaskets and latches — Inspect all door gaskets for tears, stiffness, or gaps. Close each door and confirm it latches securely. A dollar bill drag test: with a bill in the door, it should resist being pulled out when the door is closed.
- Clean the condenser — Locate the condenser (typically bottom-front behind a removable grille on Master-Bilt reach-ins). Use a fin brush and vacuum or compressed air to clean. In grease-laden environments, use a coil degreaser.
- Verify condenser fan operation — With the compressor running, confirm the condenser fan is running. A stopped fan with the compressor on = failed fan motor.
- Check evaporator for heavy frost — Open the interior panel to access the evaporator. Heavy frost indicates defrost system failure. Check defrost heater and termination thermostat.
