LG Washer E21 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E21 means your LG washer can't drain water on time. Most often a clogged drain filter or kinked hose is blocking flow. Clear the filter first.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

LG Washer E21 Error Code — What It Means

The E21 error on an LG washer signals a drain fault. The machine detects that water is not leaving the tub within the expected time frame. This is not a door lock, motor, or fill problem. It means something is blocking or restricting the drain path, preventing the pump from evacuating water properly. The washer stops the cycle and shows E21 to protect the pump and the tub seal.

The code appears most often during the drain or spin phase when the pump should be running. Water may remain visible in the drum, or the cycle may stop partway through. The underlying issue is almost always mechanical: debris in the filter, a kinked hose, a blocked house drain, or a failing pump.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Cancel the cycle and disconnect power by unplugging the washer or switching off the breaker to make sure safe access to internal components.
  2. Locate and clean the drain filter. Open the access panel at the lower front, place towels underneath, unscrew the filter cap slowly to let trapped water drain into a shallow pan, then remove and rinse the filter under running water to clear lint and debris.
  3. Inspect the drain hose from the pump outlet to the standpipe or laundry sink. Straighten any kinks, verify the hose is not inserted too far into the standpipe, and check for internal blockages by disconnecting and flushing with water.
  4. Check the house drain by pouring a bucket of water into the standpipe or sink. If it backs up or drains slowly, clear the household plumbing before restarting the washer.
  5. Access the drain pump by tipping the washer or removing the lower panel. Turn the impeller by hand to confirm it spins freely, then reconnect power and run a drain or spin cycle to verify the pump motor runs and moves water.
  6. Test pump power with a multimeter if the pump does not run. Check for voltage at the pump terminals during a drain cycle and inspect the wiring harness and connectors for damage or corrosion.
  7. Run a drain/spin test cycle after each repair step to confirm the error clears and water evacuates normally. If E21 persists after mechanical and electrical checks, suspect the main control board.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Drain pump assemblyAmazon | Match the part number to your exact LG model. Confirm voltage and mounting style before ordering.
Drain pump filter and capAmazon | Replace if the filter housing is cracked, threads are stripped, or the cap will not seal.
Drain hoseAmazon | Order the correct length and diameter for your washer. Check both the internal tub hose and the external discharge hose.
Pump wiring harnessAmazon | Needed if connectors are melted, corroded, or terminals are loose and cannot be repaired in place.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you have cleared the filter, verified the hose and house drain are open, confirmed the pump runs and the impeller turns freely, yet the E21 code still appears. Persistent errors after mechanical checks often point to a control-board fault, a pressure-sensor issue, or internal wiring damage that requires diagnostic tools and schematic knowledge. Also call for help if you are uncomfortable tipping the washer, accessing internal components, or working with live electrical circuits during testing.
