LG Refrigerator IS Error Code — What It Means
The IS code (also shown as 1S or Er IS) means the board lost a good signal from the ice maker sensor, or the ice maker fan is not spinning freely. On many LG and LG built Kenmore units the in-door ice maker carries its own sensor wired through the door hinge.
Because the wiring runs through the door, a loose or damaged connector is a frequent cause, along with moisture in the circuit, frost on the fan, or a failed sensor inside the ice maker assembly.
Common Causes
- Loose door wiring The sensor signal runs through the door hinge, so a loose connector there makes the board lose the sensor.
- Moisture in the sensor circuit Water near the ice maker can corrode the sensor or connector and break the signal.
- Frost on the ice maker fan Ice that blocks the fan can read as an abnormal condition and trip IS.
- Failed ice maker sensor A sensor that has shorted or opened inside the assembly gives the board a bad reading.
- Damaged harness in the hinge Wires flexed by the door over time can break where they pass through the hinge.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker, wait 5 minutes, then restore power and give it 10 to 15 minutes to settle.
- Open the door and inspect the ice maker connector and the wiring at the hinge for looseness or corrosion.
- Reseat the connector firmly and clean any corrosion you find on the pins.
- Check the ice maker fan for frost or a stuck blade and thaw the area if ice is present.
- Flex test the door harness gently to find any broken wire at the hinge and repair it.
- Measure the ice maker sensor where accessible and compare the reading against spec.
- Replace the in-door ice maker assembly if the built in sensor reads bad or the code persists.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| LG in-door ice maker assembly | Amazon | Match by model number. The sensor is built into the assembly on most affected units. |
| Ice maker fan motor | Amazon | Only if the fan is the part not spinning rather than the sensor. |
| Door wiring harness or connector | Amazon | Replace if a wire is broken in the hinge run. |
When to Call a Pro
Call a technician if IS returns after you reseat the wiring and replace the ice maker assembly. A broken wire hidden inside the door hinge can be hard to find and may need a tech to trace and repair.
