LG Dishwasher AE Error Code — What It Means

The AE error (sometimes displayed as AE/E1 on certain models) means your LG dishwasher has detected water or moisture in the base leak pan beneath the tub. A float switch in the pan trips when water accumulates and signals the control board to halt operation as a safety measure. This code does not always mean a catastrophic leak. Water can collect in the base from splashing, condensation, an unlevel installation, or a genuine leak from a hose, pump seal, or tub component. The dishwasher will not run normally until the water is removed and the underlying cause is corrected.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the dishwasher before starting any inspection.
  2. Remove the toe-kick panel at the bottom front of the unit and look inside the base pan for standing water, dampness, or residue.
  3. Remove all water from the base pan using towels, a sponge, or a wet-dry vacuum, then dry the pan completely.
  4. Check that the dishwasher is level by placing a carpenter’s level inside the empty tub front-to-back and side-to-side, then adjust the front and rear leveling feet until the tub sits evenly.
  5. Inspect the door gasket around the tub opening for food buildup, tears, or gaps, and clean it with a damp cloth or replace it if damaged.
  6. Remove and inspect the spray arms for clogs, cracks, or loose mounting, then clean all spray holes with a toothpick or small brush.
  7. Examine the drain hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain or disposal for kinks, splits, loose clamps, or blockages, and check the sink drain itself for restrictions.
  8. Restore power and reset the dishwasher by holding the Start or Cancel button for about five seconds, or power-cycle the unit by turning the breaker off and on.
  9. Run a short test cycle with no dishes and watch for leaks around the door, base, and drain connections, then confirm the AE code does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Door gasket / door sealAmazon | Replace if torn, stiff, or unable to seal evenly around the tub opening.
Float switch / leak detection switchAmazon | Located in the base pan. Replace if water is clear but the code persists after drying.
Drain hoseAmazon | Replace if split, cracked, or connections are leaking.
Spray arm assemblyAmazon | Replace if cracked, warped, or cleaning does not restore proper spray pattern.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you have removed all water and corrected obvious issues but the AE code returns immediately, if you find water but cannot locate the leak source after inspecting hoses and gaskets, or if the leak appears to come from the circulation pump or internal tub plumbing that requires disassembly of the lower cabinet. A technician has the tools to pressure-test the tub, inspect sump seals, and replace pump components safely. Also call if you are uncomfortable working around water and electricity or if your dishwasher is still under warranty.
