Kenmore Washer Clutch/Splutch Assembly Replacement

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Washer agitates but won't spin, spins slowly, or makes grinding noise during spin. Replacing the worn clutch/splutch assembly restores spin.

Kenmore Washer Clutch/Splutch Assembly Replacement — What This Part Does

The clutch or splutch assembly is the drive component that shifts your Kenmore top-load washer between wash and spin modes. On Whirlpool-built Kenmore machines, the splutch works with the mode shift actuator and drive pulley to transfer motor power to the basket during spin. When the actuator moves the cam ring inside the splutch, the basket drive gear engages and locks the drum into high-speed rotation.

The assembly fails when internal parts wear out. The cam ring can crack, the basket drive gear teeth strip, the spring weakens, or the pulley splines round off. Friction and load stress during thousands of spin cycles gradually degrade these surfaces. On older direct-drive Kenmore 400-style washers, a worn clutch band can cause similar symptoms. Once wear starts, the splutch cannot engage fully and the drum spins weakly or not at all.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and shut off both hot and cold water supply valves before you begin any work.
  2. Tilt the washer back against the wall or lay it on its front to access the bottom panel, then remove the lower access panel or sound shield by unscrewing the sheet-metal screws or releasing the clips.
  3. Inspect the drive belt for glazing, cracks, or looseness, then slip the belt off the motor pulley and drive pulley and set it aside.
  4. Use a socket wrench to remove the large retaining nut that holds the drive pulley onto the transmission shaft, then pull the pulley straight off the shaft and set it on your bench.
  5. Disassemble the old splutch by noting the order of the spring, cam ring, basket drive gear, housing, and any washers or spacers, then lift each component off the shaft.
  6. Check the mode shift actuator arm to confirm it is not bent or broken and that its engagement loop or pin is intact.
  7. Install the new splutch kit in reverse order: slide the housing, basket drive gear, cam ring, and spring onto the transmission shaft, making sure the actuator arm sits correctly in the cam ring’s track.
  8. Reinstall the drive pulley and thread the retaining nut onto the shaft, torquing it snug to secure the assembly without overtightening.
  9. Route the drive belt back onto the motor pulley and drive pulley, checking for proper tension and alignment, then reattach the lower panel and restore the washer to its upright position.
  10. Plug the washer back in, turn on the water supplies, and run a short test cycle through agitate, drain, and spin to verify the drum now locks into high-speed rotation without noise or slipping.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working under a tilted or front-laid washer, or if you lack the socket set and patience to disassemble the drive train in the correct order, call a technician. If the new splutch does not restore spin and you also see transmission fluid leaking from the shaft seal or hear grinding from inside the gearcase, the transmission itself may be damaged and professional diagnosis is the safer path. Some newer models require a recalibration procedure after clutch replacement, and a tech can run that sequence to prevent error codes.
