Kenmore Dryer Shuts Off Early - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Blocked vent or lint buildup causes overheating and early shutoff. Clean the lint trap, inspect the entire exhaust path, and test the high-limit thermostat.

Kenmore Dryer Shuts Off Early — What’s Happening

When a Kenmore dryer shuts off before the cycle finishes, it usually means the machine thinks the load is dry, is overheating, or has lost power or control continuity. If you see a displayed code like PF, that means power failure and you can clear it by holding Start or Pause/Cancel, or unplugging the dryer for a few minutes. Most of the time there is no code at all, just a cycle that stops 10 or 20 minutes in.

The dryer is either detecting too much heat and cutting off for safety, or a sensor or control component is telling it to stop. Poor airflow from a clogged vent makes the drum overheat quickly and can also confuse the moisture sensor, so the machine shuts down or thinks clothes are dry when they are still damp.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Check for a displayed code and if you see PF, press and hold Start or Pause/Cancel for a few seconds, or unplug the dryer for three minutes and plug it back in to reset.
  2. Pull out the lint trap and clean it thoroughly, then vacuum around the trap slot and blower housing to remove any packed lint.
  3. Pull the dryer away from the wall, disconnect the exhaust hose, and inspect the hose and the vent duct all the way to the outside for kinks, crush damage, or lint clogs.
  4. Run the dryer on a timed cycle with the vent disconnected to see if it completes the full cycle, which tells you whether the problem is venting or internal.
  5. Unplug the dryer, remove the top or front panel to access the blower and heater box, and use a multimeter to test the high-limit thermostat, cycling thermostat, and thermal fuse for continuity.
  6. Check the door switch by pressing the door-switch button with your finger and testing for continuity across the terminals with the door closed.
  7. If all thermal components and switches test good, verify 120 volts AC at the motor leads when the cycle is running, and inspect the timer or control board for burnt contacts or loose wiring.
  8. Reconnect the vent, restore all panels, and test the dryer with a normal load to confirm it runs through a complete cycle without stopping early.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
High-limit thermostatAmazon | Mounts on the heater box or blower housing and opens at a fixed high temperature to protect against overheating.
Thermal fuseAmazon | One-time safety cutoff that must be replaced if blown, usually located on the blower housing or heater assembly.
Cycling thermostatAmazon | Regulates drum temperature by cycling the heater on and off, mounted near the blower or on the heater can.
Door switchAmazon | Mounted inside the front panel near the door strike, stops the motor when the door is open.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with 240-volt wiring, disassembling cabinet panels, or testing electrical components with a multimeter. If you have replaced the high-limit thermostat, thermal fuse, and cycling thermostat and cleared the entire vent path but the dryer still shuts off early, the problem is likely in the timer, control board, or moisture-sensor circuit and requires diagnostic tools and wiring diagrams. A pro can also pressure-test long or complex vent runs to confirm proper airflow and make sure the machine is safe to operate.
