Kenmore Gas Dryer Valve Coil Kit Replacement — What This Part Does
The gas valve coil kit contains two matched coils that work together to open the gas valve on your Kenmore dryer. The 2-wire secondary coil and the 3-wire booster coil energize when the igniter glows, opening the valve so gas flows to the burner. When the coils fail, the valve doesn’t open or opens only intermittently, so the burner won’t light or stops lighting after the first cycle.
Coil windings fail over time, especially when they get hot. A common pattern is that the dryer heats normally on the first cycle when the coils are cold, then stops heating once the unit warms up. Because the coils operate as a matched pair, you replace both together as a kit rather than trying to isolate one bad coil.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dryer heats once then stops heating The burner lights on the first cycle when cold but fails to re-light after that, leaving clothes damp.
- No heat at all The dryer runs and tumbles but the burner never lights, so clothes stay wet.
- Intermittent heat The burner lights sometimes but not consistently, making dry times unpredictable and very long.
- Clothes taking too long to dry Drying cycles run much longer than normal because the burner isn’t firing reliably throughout the cycle.
- Igniter glows but burner doesn’t light You see the igniter glow orange but the gas valve never opens, so no flame appears.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and shut off the gas supply valve on the line feeding the dryer.
- Pull out the lint screen and remove the two screws under the lint screen opening at the top of the drum opening.
- Lift the top panel up and prop it open, then disconnect any wire harnesses clipped to the front panel.
- Remove the screws securing the front panel (usually along the bottom edge and inside the door opening) and lift the front panel off to expose the burner assembly.
- Locate the gas valve coils on the burner assembly (typically two coils with wire connectors attached) and unplug both wire harness connectors from the coils.
- Remove the screws holding the coil retaining bracket over the coils and lift the bracket off.
- Pull the old coils off the gas valve and note their positions so you install the new kit the same way (one 2-wire coil and one 3-wire coil).
- Slide the new coils from the kit onto the gas valve in the correct positions, reinstall the retaining bracket, and plug in both wire harness connectors.
- Reinstall the front panel and top, restore the gas supply and plug the dryer back in, then run a timed dry cycle to verify the burner lights and stays lit.

When to Call a Pro
Gas burner work on dryers requires accessing live gas connections and testing ignition components. If you’re not comfortable shutting off gas supply lines, working around open burner assemblies, or diagnosing other burner components like the flame sensor or igniter, call a qualified appliance technician. A pro can also verify gas pressure and check for other issues in the burner circuit that might cause similar symptoms. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
