Kenmore Dryer F29 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F29 on a Kenmore dryer means a moisture sensor circuit fault. Most common fix: clean the sensor bars at the lint-screen opening.

Kenmore Dryer F29 Error Code — What It Means

F29 on a Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryer indicates a fault in the moisture sensor circuit. The control has detected a short or abnormal condition in the sensing path, usually involving the sensor bars located at the lint-screen or drum opening area. This is not a simple airflow or lint-screen blockage warning. The code means the dryer cannot reliably measure fabric moisture because the sensor bars, their wiring, or the control’s sensing input has developed a low-resistance or shorted state.

The fault prevents the dryer from running automatic cycles correctly. Time-dry modes may still operate because they do not rely on the moisture sensor. In most cases the problem is external buildup on the sensor bars from detergent residue or fabric-softener film, but loose or damaged wiring and control-board faults are also possible.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power off the dryer at the breaker or by unplugging the cord, wait five minutes, then restore power and test a timed-dry cycle to see if the code clears on its own.
  2. Locate the moisture sensor bars at the lint-screen housing or drum opening (typically two thin metal strips), then wipe them clean with a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild all-purpose cleaner and dry completely.
  3. Inspect the sensor wiring harness for rubbed insulation, a loose connector, or corrosion at the terminals, and reseat or repair any damaged connections.
  4. Check continuity across the moisture sensor circuit with a multimeter to confirm you do not have a dead short or an open circuit (consult your model’s service manual for expected values if available).
  5. Run a full automatic cycle after cleaning and wiring checks to confirm the code does not return.
  6. Replace the moisture sensor bars if cleaning and wiring inspection do not resolve the fault and you measure an abnormal short or open circuit at the sensor.
  7. Replace the main control board only after verifying the sensor bars and wiring are in good condition and the fault persists on multiple test cycles.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Moisture sensor barsAmazon | Two-bar electrode assembly mounted near the lint screen or drum opening.
Moisture sensor wiring harnessAmazon | If connector terminals are corroded or a conductor is broken and cannot be repaired in place.
Main control boardAmazon | Order by your full Kenmore model number if sensor and wiring test good but F29 returns.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are uncomfortable working with 240-volt dryer wiring, if cleaning the sensor bars and inspecting connectors does not clear the fault, or if you need to verify circuit resistance values and do not have a multimeter or the service manual for your model. A pro can trace the moisture-sensing circuit end to end, rule out a control-board fault, and replace the correct part the first time without guessing.
