Kenmore Dishwasher E10 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E10 means your Kenmore dishwasher did not fill with water in time. Most often caused by a closed supply valve or clogged inlet screen.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Kenmore Dishwasher E10 Error Code — What It Means

The E10 error code on most Kenmore dishwashers signals a water fill failure. The machine expected water to enter within a set time window but did not detect enough fill. This is usually a problem with the water supply, the inlet valve, or a restriction blocking flow into the tub.

The error does not point to a leak or drain issue. It means water is not getting in. The dishwasher’s timer or control board monitors the fill cycle and throws E10 when the expected water level is not reached. Check the supply side first before assuming the valve itself has failed.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker and close the water supply valve before you start any inspection or repair work.
  2. Check that the water supply valve is fully open. Follow the copper or braided hose from the dishwasher back to the shut-off under the sink and turn it counterclockwise all the way.
  3. Inspect the inlet hose for kinks, twists, or pinch points along its length and straighten or reposition it as needed.
  4. Disconnect the inlet hose at the dishwasher and remove the inlet valve screen or filter where the hose threads onto the valve, then rinse debris and mineral scale from the screen under running water.
  5. Run a fill test by restoring power and water, starting a cycle, and watching whether water enters the tub with normal pressure or remains weak or absent.
  6. Test the water inlet valve for electrical continuity across the solenoid coil and verify it opens when energized, replacing the valve if it fails either test or remains stuck closed.
  7. Inspect wiring and connectors from the control board to the inlet valve for breaks, corrosion, or loose terminals, and repair or replace damaged wiring as required.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Water inlet valveAmazon | Match to your exact Kenmore model number stamped inside the door frame or on the tub wall.
Inlet hose (braided stainless or rubber)Amazon | Use a hose rated for appliance supply, typically 3/8-inch compression fittings.

When to Call a Pro

If you have verified that the water supply is open, the hose is clear, and the inlet screen is clean but the E10 code returns, the inlet valve or control board is likely at fault. Testing the valve solenoid for proper resistance and mechanical operation requires a multimeter and some electrical knowledge. If you are not comfortable working with live voltage or removing the dishwasher to access the valve and wiring harness, call a qualified appliance technician. Also call if the error persists after replacing the inlet valve, since that points to a control board or wiring fault that requires diagnostic tools and schematics.
