Keeprite is a Canadian HVAC brand that uses the same ICP (International Comfort Products) platform as Heil, Tempstar, and Comfortmaker. E1 on a Keeprite furnace indicates a pressure switch fault — the induced draft motor ran but the pressure switch failed to close within the startup window, locking out the ignition sequence. The code clears when the root cause is corrected and the furnace is power-cycled.
Common Causes
- Flue or intake blockage — Canadian winters are hard on vent terminations. Ice bridging, snow cover, or frozen condensate in the PVC exhaust pipe is a very common E1 cause in cold climates.
- Disconnected or cracked pressure switch hose — The small rubber hose from the inducer to the pressure switch can crack from age, especially with temperature cycling in cold utility rooms.
- Failed inducer motor or run capacitor — A motor running below speed cannot build adequate draft, even with a clear flue.
- Defective pressure switch — Diaphragm failure or corroded contacts prevent switch closure even with normal draft present.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Check the exterior vent cap — Look outside at the PVC vent termination. Clear any ice, snow, or frost buildup. On high-efficiency models, check both the exhaust and the combustion air intake pipe.
- Check for condensate blockage — On 90+ AFUE furnaces, frozen or blocked condensate drain lines can cause water to back up and block the inducer. Confirm the condensate drain is flowing freely.
- Inspect the pressure switch hose — With power off, trace and inspect the hose. Replace if cracked. Reconnect if loose from either the inducer housing port or the switch nipple.
- Test the inducer motor — During a heat call, the inducer should start and run steadily. A squealing or slow-spinning motor indicates a bearing or capacitor failure. Test the capacitor with a meter before ordering a full motor.
- Test the pressure switch — Temporarily jump the switch terminals with the inducer running to determine if the switch itself is faulty. If the furnace proceeds to ignition with the switch jumped, replace it. Remove the jumper immediately after testing.
