Hoshizaki KM Series E1 Error Code — What It Means
The E1 error on Hoshizaki KM Series modular ice machines (KM-320, KM-515, KM-1301 and similar) indicates an ice making cycle fault — the machine was unable to complete a freeze or harvest cycle within the allowed time window. Hoshizaki’s control board monitors cycle duration; if the ice bridge doesn’t form or the harvest cycle doesn’t complete within spec, E1 is logged and the machine stops.
Common Causes
- Dirty condenser coil — Reduced heat rejection forces the refrigeration system to work harder, extending freeze time until it exceeds the cycle limit.
- Low refrigerant charge — Insufficient refrigerant slows freeze-down. The evaporator doesn’t get cold enough quickly enough, and the cycle times out.
- Dirty evaporator / water distribution — Scale on the evaporator plates reduces heat transfer. Uneven water distribution from clogged spray nozzles also slows ice formation.
- High water temperature — Incoming water above 90°F significantly extends freeze time. Common in summer or when the water line runs through a warm space.

- Clean the condenser — Remove the front panel and clean the condenser fins with a fin brush and compressed air. A clogged condenser on a KM unit in a warm kitchen is the single most common E1 cause.
