Likely parts to price

Price the common parts before you book service.

Thermistor

Common temperature-sensing fault part. Confirm resistance range and connector.

Evaporator fan motor

Useful to price for airflow, warm cabinet, or coil-icing symptoms.

Defrost heater

Check this on ice buildup and defrost-cycle failures.

Water filter

Low-risk maintenance item for water-flow and ice-quality complaints.

Hoshizaki F01 Error Code — What It Means

Hoshizaki F01 indicates abnormal ice making operation — the machine started a freeze cycle but didn’t complete it within the maximum allowed time. Hoshizaki ice machines use a timed freeze cycle; if the freeze cycle time exceeds the programmed maximum (often 60–90 minutes depending on model), F01 trips and the machine enters a lockout. This fault protects the refrigeration system from running in a prolonged, inefficient state and alerts the operator that the machine can no longer make ice at its rated capacity.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Check ambient and water conditions — Confirm the room temperature is within Hoshizaki’s rated range (50–100°F for most models). Check incoming water temperature. If either is above spec, address the environmental condition.
  2. Clean the condenser — On air-cooled units, brush or vacuum the condenser fins and use a coil cleaner spray. Heavy grease buildup in restaurant environments requires a foaming degreaser. After cleaning, rinse and verify airflow.
  3. Clean the water system — Remove and clean the water distributor, float valve assembly, and the ice-making evaporator surfaces using Hoshizaki nickel-safe scale remover. Follow the descale and sanitize procedure in the service manual.
  4. Check refrigerant — call a certified tech — If condenser and water cleaning don’t resolve extended freeze times, the refrigerant system needs to be checked by an EPA 608-certified technician.
  5. Reset the machine — After cleaning, turn the machine off using the switch (not by unplugging), wait 5 minutes, and restart. The machine will begin a new freeze cycle.
  6. Monitor the first freeze cycle — Watch the first cycle to see if ice is forming on the evaporator plates within 20–30 minutes. If not, refrigerant or evaporator issues remain.

Technician Tips

When diagnosing commercial refrigeration faults, start with the controller’s alarm history. Most digital controllers (Dixell, Carel, Eliwell) store the last 5-10 alarms with timestamps. An E1 alarm that appears consistently every few hours suggests a sensor going bad — the resistance value drifts until it’s out of range. An intermittent HI/LO alarm that appears only during hot afternoons suggests a condenser issue, not a sensor fault.

Prevention: Schedule quarterly condenser coil cleaning. Dirty coils are the #1 cause of high-head-pressure faults and compressor overheating in commercial refrigeration. Use a soft brush and compressed air — never a pressure washer on the coil fins.

Need Replacement Parts?

Before ordering, match the ice-machine part to the model number, electrical rating, and failure symptom. Check current prices on Amazon - prices and availability change frequently.

When to Call a Pro

If F01 persists after cleaning the condenser and water system, the refrigerant charge must be checked by a licensed refrigeration technician. Low refrigerant may indicate a leak that also needs to be repaired before recharging.
