Honeywell Thermostat E2 Error — Low Battery / Power Loss

The E2 error on Honeywell thermostats (RTH series, T4, T6, and older programmable models) indicates a low battery or loss of power condition. On some models, E2 specifically means the battery voltage has dropped below the threshold needed to maintain settings reliably.

Fixing E2 — Battery-Powered Models

Step 1 — Replace the batteries. Use fresh AA or AAA alkaline batteries (not rechargeable). Rechargeable NiMH batteries deliver lower voltage (1.2V vs 1.5V) and may not satisfy the thermostat’s power requirements.

Step 2 — Remove batteries for 30 seconds before reinserting. This forces a full reset of the display and clears the E2 flag.

Step 3 — After battery replacement, the thermostat may ask you to re-enter time, date, and program schedule. Have your schedule ready.

Step 4 — Check the battery compartment. Look for corrosion on the contacts (white or green residue). Clean with a cotton swab and a drop of white vinegar, then rinse with water and dry completely.

Fixing E2 — Hardwired Models with C-Wire

If your thermostat is wired to the HVAC system with a C (common) wire, E2 should not appear — the C wire provides 24VAC continuous power. If you see E2 on a hardwired model:

1. Check that the C wire is connected at both the thermostat and the furnace/air handler
2. Verify the furnace is powered (check the furnace power switch and disconnect)
3. Measure voltage between R and C terminals — should be 24–28VAC. If not, the transformer or wiring is the problem.

Common Mistake — No C Wire, Using R-Wire Only

Older homes often only ran 2-wire (R and W only) thermostat wire. If you installed a newer Honeywell thermostat without a C wire, the thermostat steals power from the heating/cooling system, which causes:

• E2 errors
• Short-cycling of the HVAC system
• Battery drain even though the display says “hardwired”

Fix: Run a proper C wire or use the Honeywell THP9045A1098 C-wire adapter (installs in the furnace to provide C-wire power over existing 2-wire runs).

When E2 Isn’t the Battery

If fresh batteries don’t clear E2 within 5 minutes, the issue may be:

• A failed thermostat circuit board
• A faulty display
• Communication bus error (on smart/Wi-Fi models)

Try a factory reset: on most RTH models, press and hold the MENU button for 5 seconds and select Reset → Factory. If E2 persists after reset with fresh batteries, the thermostat needs replacement.
