Heil Furnace E1 Error Code — What It Means
E1 on a Heil furnace (part of the International Comfort Products / ICP family) indicates a pressure switch fault. The induced draft motor started but the pressure switch did not close within the required time window, preventing the ignition sequence from proceeding. Heil uses the same ICP control platform as Tempstar, Comfortmaker, and Day & Night, so diagnostics and parts are largely interchangeable across those brands.
Common Causes
- Blocked flue or vent termination — Debris, ice, or a bird nest blocking the PVC exhaust cap prevents the inducer from building enough negative pressure to close the switch.
- Cracked or disconnected pressure switch hose — The small rubber hose from the inducer housing to the pressure switch is essential for sensing draft; any leak prevents switch closure.
- Failed induced draft motor or capacitor — A motor running below speed cannot generate sufficient negative pressure, even with a clear flue.
- Defective pressure switch — Diaphragm failure or oxidized contacts can keep the switch open regardless of actual draft conditions.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Check the flue termination — Go outside and visually inspect the exhaust vent cap. Clear any ice, debris, or nesting material. For two-pipe systems (90+ AFUE), check both the exhaust and combustion air intake.
- Inspect the pressure switch hose — With power off, locate the hose connecting the inducer housing to the pressure switch. Check for cracks, kinks, or loose connections. Replace if damaged.
- Test the induced draft motor — Restore power and listen for the inducer at the start of a heat call. If the inducer is slow or silent, test its capacitor with a capacitor meter. Replace the capacitor or motor as indicated.
- Jump the pressure switch to test — Temporarily bridge the pressure switch terminals while the inducer is running. If the furnace proceeds through ignition successfully, the pressure switch is faulty — replace it. Remove the jumper immediately after the test.
- Reset and confirm — Remove any test jumpers, restore normal wiring, power cycle, and run a full heat cycle to verify the E1 code does not return.
