⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a blown line fuse inside the unit. Turn off the breaker, open the cabinet, and test the fuse for continuity with a multimeter.

GE Microwave Won’t Start — What’s Happening

A GE microwave that won’t start is not a single fault code. The display may show PF after a power interruption, or it may show nothing at all if the failure is a blown fuse, bad door switch, thermal fuse, or control problem. If your unit shows PF, GE identifies it as a power-failure indication that can appear after initial installation or after power is restored.

When the microwave is completely dead with no display, that is generally a power-delivery or interlock issue rather than an on-board error code. GE says the PF code can clear by cycling power at the breaker or fuse supplying the microwave for 30 seconds.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify supply power at the outlet and confirm the breaker or fuse is on.
  2. Turn off the microwave’s breaker or remove power for 30 seconds, then restore it to clear PF or control issues.
  3. Disconnect power, remove the cabinet, and test the line fuse for continuity with a multimeter.
  4. If the fuse is open, replace it and identify why it blew before reassembling.
  5. Inspect the latch area and test all door switches for proper operation and alignment.
  6. Test the thermal fuse or thermal cutoff for continuity and replace if open.
  7. If all safety devices test good, inspect the control board and power-supply components for burned connectors, failed relays, or damaged wiring.
  8. Reassemble and functional-test to verify the unit starts, heats, and no codes return.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Line fuseAmazon | Main fuse inside the microwave cabinet.
Door switch or interlock microswitchAmazon | Monitors door closure and latch position.
Thermal fuse or thermal cutoffAmazon | Not resettable once tripped.
Main control boardAmazon | Replace only after simpler faults are ruled out.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if you are not comfortable working inside the microwave cabinet or if you lack a multimeter to test fuses and switches. Microwaves store high voltage in the capacitor even when unplugged, so discharge the capacitor before touching any internal components. If the line fuse, door switches, and thermal fuse all test good but the unit still won’t start, the control board or power-supply components likely need replacement by a qualified technician.
