GE Dryer Thermal Fuse Replacement — What This Part Does

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that cuts power to the dryer or heating circuit when the dryer overheats. It is designed to open when temperatures exceed safe limits, which prevents fire but also stops the dryer from running or heating depending on the model and circuit design.

A blown thermal fuse is not the root cause. It means the dryer overheated due to restricted airflow, a clogged vent, dirty lint screen, or a malfunctioning thermostat. The fuse cannot be reset and must be replaced, but you also need to fix the overheat condition or the new fuse will blow again.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker to disconnect all power before you start.
  2. Locate the thermal fuse, which is usually mounted on the blower housing or near the heating element or heater box (exact placement varies by GE dryer model).
  3. Remove the dryer cabinet panels or rear access panel as needed to reach the fuse (consult your model’s service sheet or wiring diagram for exact location).
  4. Use a multimeter set to continuity or resistance and test across the two terminals of the fuse to confirm it is open (no continuity means the fuse has blown).
  5. Inspect the entire air path before replacing the fuse: check the lint screen, exhaust vent hose, and exterior vent for blockages or restrictions, and clean out all lint buildup inside the dryer.
  6. Disconnect the two wire connectors from the thermal fuse terminals and remove the mounting screws or bracket that hold the fuse to the blower housing or heater box.
  7. Install the new thermal fuse in the same position, secure it with the mounting screws, and reconnect the two wires to the fuse terminals.
  8. Reassemble the dryer cabinet and panels, restore power, and run a test cycle to confirm the dryer starts and heats properly.
  9. Verify that strong airflow is coming out of the exterior vent during the test cycle to confirm you have eliminated the overheat condition.

The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working with electrical components or disassembling the dryer cabinet, call a technician. Also call a pro if the new fuse blows again after replacement, which means there is a deeper problem like a failed thermostat, cycling thermostat, or high-limit thermostat that you have not identified. If the dryer uses gas and you suspect burner or igniter problems in addition to the fuse, have a qualified appliance tech diagnose and repair the entire heating system safely.
