GE Dryer Drive Motor Replacement — What This Part Does
The drive motor is the main motor that turns the drum via the belt and also drives the blower. When it runs, it spins the drum to tumble clothes and powers the blower to push heated air through the load. In some GE models the motor’s internal centrifugal switch closes to send voltage to the heating circuit, so a bad motor can prevent both drum motion and heat.
The motor fails when its internal windings burn out or go open-circuit, when the centrifugal switch inside stops closing correctly, or when internal bearings seize and the motor stalls or hums. Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dryer will not start at all You press start but nothing happens, which points to an open motor circuit or failed internal switch.
- Motor hums but drum does not turn The motor tries to run and makes a humming noise, but the drum stays still because of seized bearings or a failed centrifugal switch.
- Drum spins but dryer produces no heat If the motor’s centrifugal switch is not closing, it won’t send 120 VAC to the heating circuit and the dryer runs cold.
- Dryer runs intermittently or stops mid-cycle The motor cuts out randomly during operation, usually from failing windings or a switch that opens and closes at the wrong times.
- Motor continuity test reads open or infinite ohms A multimeter check on the motor terminals should read 0 ohms or very close to 0, so any open reading means the motor has failed.
- No 120 VAC at motor red-wire terminal during heat cycle When you test the motor red-wire terminal to the chassis ground on an AC volts setting during a regular heat cycle, you expect 120 VAC if the centrifugal switch is working.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer or shut off the circuit breaker so you have zero power at the unit.
- Pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the lint-duct hose from the back exhaust.
- Remove the top panel or front bulkhead to access the drum, belt, and motor compartment (exact disassembly varies by model, but most GE dryers require removing screws along the top or front edge).
- Lift the drum out of the cabinet or tilt it forward to release the drive belt from the motor pulley and idler, and note the belt routing for reassembly.
- Disconnect the motor wiring harness connector and remove the blower wheel cover or housing to access the blower wheel on the motor shaft.
- Pull the blower wheel straight off the motor shaft (it may be a friction fit or have a retaining clip), then unbolt or unclip the motor from its mounting bracket or floor pan.
- Install the new motor onto the bracket or clips, slide the blower wheel back onto the motor shaft, and secure the blower housing.
- Reconnect the motor wiring harness, loop the drive belt around the motor pulley and idler in the correct path, and lower the drum back into place.
- Reinstall the cabinet panels, reconnect the lint duct, plug the dryer back in, and run a test cycle on regular heat to confirm the drum turns and the dryer heats normally.
