GE Dryer Door Switch Replacement — What This Part Does

The door switch is an electrical interlock that signals the dryer control board when the door is closed. When you shut the door, the strike or plunger presses the switch actuator and closes the circuit, allowing the dryer to start and run. If the switch fails or its contacts wear out, the control sees an open circuit and treats the door as open even when it’s latched.

Most failures come from worn or burned internal contacts inside the switch body. Loose or damaged wiring at the switch terminals, a switch that has popped out of its mounting hole in the front panel, or a broken door latch that doesn’t fully press the actuator can also cause no-start symptoms. Technicians verify the switch by checking for a continuity change when the actuator is pressed and released.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall or switch off the circuit breaker to kill all power before you begin.
  2. Remove the screws securing the top or console panel, then lift or slide the top forward to access the front panel area where the door switch mounts.
  3. Locate the door switch near the door opening on the front panel, usually a small rectangular or round plastic body with a plunger or lever that the door strike presses.
  4. Inspect the switch for physical damage, a loose fit in the mounting hole, or damaged wiring at the harness connector.
  5. Depress the locking tab on the wire harness connector and pull it straight off the switch terminals.
  6. Press the release tab or twist the switch body (depending on your model’s mounting style) to remove the old switch from the front panel opening.
  7. Snap the new switch into the panel opening until you hear or feel it lock into place, then push the harness connector onto the terminals until the tab clicks.
  8. Reassemble the top or console panel and secure all screws, then restore power to the dryer.
  9. Close the door and press start to verify the dryer runs, then open the door mid-cycle to confirm the machine stops immediately.

The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro

If you’ve replaced the door switch and the dryer still won’t start, the problem may be elsewhere in the start circuit (belt switch, motor relay, or control board) or a wiring fault between the switch and control. A technician can trace the door-switch circuit with a meter and check the belt, motor, and control board. If you’re uncomfortable working inside the cabinet or handling live wiring during testing, have a qualified appliance tech diagnose and replace the switch for you.
