GE Dishwasher FTD Error Code — What It Means
The FTD code, also shown as F56 on some models, means the dishwasher failed to drain within its window. You will usually find standing water in the tub.
Almost every FTD starts with a clogged filter or a small object stuck in the drain pump. Clean those before buying parts.
Common Causes
- Clogged filter or sump Packed food debris in the filter blocks water from reaching the pump.
- Jammed drain pump Glass, a seed, or a label locks the pump impeller so it cannot turn.
- Blocked or kinked drain hose A clog or sharp bend in the drain hose stops the outflow.
- Disposer knockout plug in place A new disposer still holding its plug leaves the drain dead ended.
- Clogged air gap A gunked countertop air gap chokes the drain line.
- Failed drain pump The pump motor stops running and the water never leaves the tub.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Cut power at the breaker and bail out standing water with a cup and towel.
- Remove the bottom filter and clean the sump and drain area.
- Check the drain pump inlet for glass or debris locking the impeller.
- Disconnect and flush the drain hose to confirm it runs clear.
- Clean the air gap and verify any disposer plug was removed.
- Restore power and run a drain cycle to confirm the tub empties.
- If the path is clear and water stays put, replace the drain pump.

When to Call a Pro
If the filter, hose, and air gap are clear and FTD keeps coming back, the drain pump likely needs replacing. Call a technician if reaching the pump from below is more than you want to handle.
