Frigidaire Washer Won't Spin - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a faulty door lock, lid switch, or door latch assembly prevents the spin enable circuit from closing. Test and replace the lock.

Frigidaire Washer Won’t Spin — What’s Happening

When your Frigidaire washer fills, tumbles, and drains but refuses to enter spin, the machine is being interlocked out of spin by the door lock circuit or by a control-board-detected fault in that circuit. If the washer won’t spin and also leaves water in the tub, a drain problem or drain pump control fault can prevent spin because the machine will not advance into spin until it believes the tub is properly drained.

Frigidaire and Electrolux washers do not use a single dedicated code for this symptom. The exact diagnosis depends on your model and any stored error codes. On some front-load units, E47 indicates the control sees an open door PTC or wax-motor circuit during spin, and E23 points to a drain pump relay or control fault rather than a direct spin motor failure.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the exact symptom by running a test cycle and noting whether the washer fills, tumbles, drains, and then refuses to ramp into spin or whether it stops earlier in the cycle.
  2. Enter diagnostic mode using the model’s tech sheet or service literature (often stored inside the cabinet or behind the lower panel) and retrieve any stored error codes.
  3. Redistribute the load and confirm the basket is not off-balance, then retry spin to rule out a simple load imbalance.
  4. Inspect the door or lid lock mechanically by confirming the door fully latches, checking the strike and latch for damage, and testing the lock body for continuity and resistance per the tech sheet.
  5. If your model uses a wax motor or PTC lock actuator, test the actuator coil for continuity and replace the assembly if the circuit is open.
  6. Check drain performance by inspecting the drain hose for kinks, clogs, or incorrect installation, then remove and inspect the pump for debris, blockage, or electrical failure.
  7. Inspect the drive belt for wear, tension, and cracks (or the coupler if applicable), and test the motor if both agitation and spin are weak or absent.
  8. Check the main control board and all harness connectors if the lock, drain, and drive components test good but the machine still refuses to spin.

Door lock assemblyAmazon | Match by model number; includes latch, switch, and wax motor or PTC actuator where applicable.
Drain pumpAmazon | Verify voltage to pump and test for blockage before replacing.
Main control boardAmazon | Replace only after confirming all other components test good and connectors are clean.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if you have retrieved an error code but do not have the service literature to interpret it, if you are not comfortable testing live voltage at the door lock or control board, or if the washer uses a direct-drive or complex suspension system and you need help isolating mechanical versus electrical faults. Also call for help if you have replaced the door lock and drain pump but the symptom persists, since that points to a control board or harness issue that requires schematic-level diagnosis.
