Frigidaire Washer Won't Drain - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Most likely a main control board relay fault (E23 code) preventing pump power, or a clogged pump/coin trap. Check pump circuit first.

Frigidaire Washer Won’t Drain — What’s Happening

When your Frigidaire washer won’t drain, the machine often displays an E23 code, which means the control board has detected a problem in the circuit that powers or controls the drain pump. This is different from a simple clog. The control may not be sending power to the pump, or the pump circuit itself has failed. Some models show E21 instead, which indicates a slow drain or restricted drain system.

Either way, you’ll see standing water in the drum at the end of a cycle. The washer may not advance to spin, or it may try to drain but nothing happens. On some models the pump stays silent, on others you hear a hum but no water movement. Both point to either an electrical fault in the drain pump control or a mechanical blockage in the pump or hose.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and confirm the symptom by checking for standing water and noting any displayed code (E23 or E21).
  2. Inspect the drain hose from the back of the washer to the standpipe for kinks, crushing, or blockage, and straighten or clear any restriction.
  3. Access the coin trap or pump filter (usually behind a lower front panel) and remove any lint, coins, hair, or debris from the trap and pump inlet.
  4. Manually spin the pump impeller through the coin trap opening to check for binding, damage, or foreign objects, and clear any obstruction.
  5. Plug the washer back in and run a drain or spin cycle, listening closely for pump operation (no sound suggests electrical fault, hum with no drain suggests mechanical blockage).
  6. If the pump does not run at all, disconnect power again and check the wiring harness and connectors between the control board and pump for corrosion, damage, or loose pins.
  7. Test the drain pump for electrical continuity (approximately 10 to 20 ohms across the pump terminals) and replace the pump if it reads open or shorted.
  8. If the pump and wiring test good but the washer still will not drain, replace the main control board to address the relay or output circuit fault.

Parts You Might Need

Drain pump assemblyAmazon | Includes motor, impeller, and housing; match your model number.
Main control boardAmazon | Also called electronic control board; verify board part number before ordering.
Wiring harnessAmazon | Order only if connectors or wires are visibly damaged or corroded.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are uncomfortable working with electrical connectors or testing components with a multimeter. If you have replaced the drain pump and checked all hoses but the machine still displays E23 and will not drain, the fault is likely in the control board relay circuit or wiring, which requires diagnostic tools and experience to trace safely. Also call a pro if you cannot access the coin trap or pump on your model, or if water remains trapped and you need help draining the tub manually before service.
