Frigidaire Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Most often the ice maker switch is off, the freezer is too warm, or the water filter is clogged. Check the switch, verify 0°F freezer temp, and replace the filter.

Frigidaire Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working — What’s Happening

When a Frigidaire refrigerator ice maker stops working, it means the unit cannot complete a normal ice production cycle. This is not a single fault code but a symptom with multiple possible causes. The ice maker may be turned off at the control panel or mechanical arm, the freezer may be running too warm to freeze water, the water supply may be restricted or turned off, or a component like the inlet valve or ice maker module may have failed.

On newly installed units, air trapped in the plumbing can cause two to three empty cycles before ice production begins. Frigidaire notes that after any repair or installation, the system may need up to 24 hours to produce ice normally. Ice production requires the freezer to be at about 0°F and will often stop completely if the temperature rises above 10°F.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Check that the ice maker is turned on at the display panel or that the mechanical bail arm is in the down position and not obstructed by ice.
  2. Verify the freezer temperature is at or below 0°F using an appliance thermometer and adjust the freezer control if needed.
  3. Remove and inspect the ice bin for jammed or compacted ice blocking the bail arm or ejector fingers.
  4. Replace the water filter if it is overdue or if water flow to the dispenser is slow.
  5. Trace the water supply line from the wall to the refrigerator and confirm the shutoff valve is open and the line is not kinked, crushed, or frozen.
  6. Test the water inlet valve by checking for power at the valve terminals and listening for a click or hum when the ice maker calls for water. Replace the valve if it receives power but does not open.
  7. Remove the ice maker module and test the thermostat with a multimeter. At room temperature it should read 0 ohms. When cooled to 16°F to -4°F it should read open. Replace the module if the thermostat does not behave that way.
  8. If the freezer is warm, inspect the condenser coils for dust buildup, check the condenser fan for operation, and look for excessive frost on the evaporator that indicates a defrost system failure.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Frigidaire refrigerator water filterAmazon | Replace every six months or when flow is restricted.
Refrigerator water inlet valveAmazon | Solenoid valve that opens to fill the ice maker. Requires at least 20 psi.
Frigidaire ice maker assembly (module)Amazon | Includes the control head, thermostat, and ejector mechanism. Often replaced as a complete unit.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if the freezer will not reach 0°F after cleaning the coils and verifying the fans run, if you are not comfortable testing electrical components with a multimeter, or if the ice maker module and inlet valve both test normal but the unit still does not produce ice. Refrigerant or sealed-system problems that affect freezer temperature require licensed service. Also call a pro if you find heavy frost buildup on the evaporator coil, which points to a defrost timer, heater, or thermistor failure that is beyond typical owner-level repair.
