E4A on a Frigidaire dryer is a timeout error: the machine ran a cycle for longer than its maximum allowed time without the moisture sensors detecting that the load was dry. Rather than run indefinitely, the dryer stops and logs E4A. The root cause is almost always airflow or sensor related — both are fixable without professional help.

Why E4A Happens
Your Frigidaire dryer’s “Auto Dry” cycles use two methods to decide when clothes are dry:
- Moisture sensors — metal bars inside the drum that detect electrical conductivity (wet clothes conduct; dry clothes don’t).
- Temperature monitoring — the thermistor tracks how exhaust air temperature rises as moisture leaves.
E4A fires when either method can’t confirm dryness within the cycle time limit. The two broad causes are:
- Reduced heat or airflow — clothes actually aren’t dry because the dryer is underperforming.
- Sensor misreading — clothes are dry but the machine doesn’t know it.
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1 — Clean Everything That Touches Airflow
Start here before anything else. Airflow restrictions cause the majority of E4A errors.
- Lint filter — clean it. While you’re at it, wash it under warm water and dry thoroughly. Fabric softener residue coats the mesh and reduces airflow even when it appears clean.
- Exhaust duct — disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer and from the wall, and check for lint buildup inside. Use a dryer vent cleaning brush to clear the full length.
- Exterior vent cover — go outside and look at the vent termination. The flap should move freely. Lint nests and bird nests (really) block these regularly.
- Duct length and type — flexible foil or plastic accordion ducts are notorious for lint accumulation and airflow restrictions. Replace with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.
Step 2 — Don’t Overload the Dryer
An overloaded drum restricts tumbling, which means clothes clump together and the core of the load never dries — even if the dryer is performing perfectly. For reference, a dryer should be no more than 3/4 full for efficient drying.
Step 3 — Clean the Moisture Sensor Bars
If clothes feel dry but E4A still appears, dirty sensor bars are the likely cause. The sensors can’t distinguish between wet and dry fabric if they’re coated with mineral deposits or fabric softener residue.
- Open the dryer door and look inside the drum near the front, below the door opening. You’ll see two or more metallic strips (the moisture sensors).
- Wipe them with a cloth lightly dampened with white vinegar or rubbing alcohol.
- Let dry completely before running a test cycle.
This fix takes 2 minutes and resolves E4A surprisingly often.
Step 4 — Check for Proper Heat
Run a 10-minute Timed Dry cycle on High Heat and feel the drum air 2–3 minutes in — it should be noticeably hot, not just warm. If heat seems low:
- Test the heating element for continuity (multimeter, look for near-0 ohms).
- Test the thermal fuse — a blown thermal fuse is a one-way safety device that cuts heat permanently until replaced.
- Test the high-limit thermostat.
Step 5 — Verify Exhaust Duct Length
The maximum exhaust duct run for most residential dryers is 25 feet (with deductions for each elbow turn). Beyond this, friction loss is too high. If your installation uses a very long duct run, the dryer will never dry efficiently regardless of other repairs.

Reset the Error
- Resolve the underlying cause.
- Press Cancel or turn the selector to Off.

- Clean the lint filter before every load.
- Clean the exhaust duct annually (or every 6 months if you dry 5+ loads per week).
- Wipe moisture sensor bars with alcohol every 3 months.
- Sort loads by weight — dry towels and jeans separately from lighter fabrics.
