Frigidaire Dishwasher Detergent Dispenser Replacement Guide — What This Part Does

The detergent dispenser assembly holds the soap cup, latch, spring, and wax motor that opens the door mid-cycle. When the control board sends 120 VAC to the wax motor at the right point in the wash, the wax element expands and releases the latch so the door pops open and detergent drops into the tub. The wax motor is the most common failure point. Over time the motor winding opens (tests infinite ohms instead of around 500 ohms), detergent residue jams the latch, or the plastic housing cracks.

A working wax motor tests close to 500 ohms on a multimeter set to Rx1. If you see infinity the motor is dead. Some models use a unitized assembly so you replace the whole cup and motor together. Other models let you swap just the wax motor or spring. Always check for detergent buildup and cracks before you buy parts.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the dishwasher.
  2. Open the dishwasher door and remove the screws securing the inner door panel or outer door panel (model-dependent) to access the dispenser from the back side.
  3. Carefully pull the panel away and locate the detergent dispenser assembly mounted on the inside of the door.
  4. Disconnect the two-wire harness from the wax motor terminals.
  5. Test the wax motor with a multimeter set to Rx1: a reading around 500 ohms is good, infinity means replace the motor.
  6. Remove the screws or clips holding the dispenser assembly or wax motor to the door and lift the old part out.
  7. Clean any detergent residue from the door pocket and inspect the latch and spring for damage.
  8. Install the new wax motor or full dispenser assembly, reconnect the wire harness, and secure all mounting screws.
  9. Reassemble the door panel, restore power, and run a short test cycle to confirm the dispenser door opens mid-wash.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working with live 120 VAC wiring or removing door panels call a technician. If the dispenser still will not open after you replace the motor and confirm good voltage at the connector the control board timing circuit may be faulty and that diagnosis requires a service call. Any time you see signs of water intrusion or corrosion inside the door panel have a pro inspect the door gasket and tub seals to prevent future electrical shorts.
