Follett Ice Machine Error Code E3 — What It Means
The E3 error on Follett ice and water dispensers indicates an ice level sensor fault — the sensor that detects when the ice storage bin is full has either failed or is reporting an invalid condition. Follett uses an optical or capacitive ice level sensor; E3 fires when the sensor reading is out of range, stuck, or producing no signal. If the machine can’t determine ice level, it stops making ice as a safety measure.
Common Causes
- Ice bridge over the sensor — A slab of ice spanning across the bin can block the sensor and make it read “full” when the bin is actually partially empty. Very common in humid environments.
- Sensor contamination — Mineral deposits or mold growth on the sensor face causes false or erratic readings.
- Sensor wiring fault — The sensor lead can be damaged or disconnected, causing E3 as a “no signal” fault.
- Failed ice level sensor — After extended service, the sensor itself fails and needs replacement.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Break up any ice bridge — Open the bin and look for a solid slab of ice spanning the bin interior. Break it up with the ice scoop. Restart and see if E3 clears.
- Clean the sensor — Locate the ice level sensor (typically mounted on the bin wall). Clean the sensor face with a soft cloth and warm water. Remove any scale or mold.
- Run a cleaning cycle — Use Follett Ice Machine Cleaner per the manual to descale the water system and sensor surfaces.
- Check sensor wiring — Inspect the sensor cable from the sensor to the control board for damage. Reseat the connector at the board.
- Replace the sensor — If cleaning and wiring checks don’t resolve E3, replace the ice level sensor with a Follett OEM part.
